Prevent Theft This Harvest Season

The Margan family farm in Grant County, Wisconsin, has a rich history spanning over a century. Purchased by Paul's father in 1924 from his grandfather, the 120-acre farm originally featured a log cabin, a granary, and a chicken house. In 1935, the log cabin was replaced with a new house. The farm operated as a dairy farm, with Paul's mother raising chickens and maintaining large gardens, while hay, oats, and corn were grown to feed the animals. During the Great Depression, Paul's father even resorted to cutting tree limbs to feed the cows. Over the years, several improvements were made, including the addition of corn cribs, a garage, and a machine shed. Now, Paul, the last surviving sibling, oversees the farm, which he rents out to a neighbor. Receiving the Century Farm Award has been a meaningful recognition for Paul and his family, honoring the legacy of the farm and the memories created there.

Darrin and several partners recently finished up a week’s worth of community discussions on this issue during Madison Housing Week and has several takeaways to share with Pam that will be useful to community leaders and citizens all over the state. Darrin Wasniewski, Senior Associate State Director-Community Outreach for AARP Wisconsin, was a part of the group and talks with Pam Jahnke about some of the shared challenges, and unique challenges that communities and their citizens face.

Wasniewski explains why AARP is involved in housing policy and identifies some of the key facts that people should think about as they age.  Will your home allow you to remain there, or will modifications be needed?  How can you remain within your community even if housing adjustments might be needed?  Wasniewski explains that there's scientific evidence that shows people thrive when they're in familiar surrounds.  He also share the resources available to help with these questions and considerations, through AARP of Wisconsin.

Aasness says that it's absolutely critical that Congress complete a Farm Bill before the end of the calendar year in this current "lame duck" session. Without it, farmers and agribusinesses face uncertainty well into calendar year 2025.
