Think of your cheese going through TSA before it gets to you -- metal detectors, X-rays... and the careful eyes of the farmer, processor, and the dairy sanitation specialists with the state of Wisconsin. But sometimes, issues still happen. Stephanie Hoff is getting a look at the recall process today with Elsie Lundquist. She’s one of about 20 dairy sanitarians with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.


Snow's back in the forecast for most of the state of Wisconsin sometime today into the weekend.  Stu Muck gives us some estimates on what we could see, and an outlook on the cooling temperatures.


Time for a Mid-West Farm Report Ride Along.  This time Pam Jahnke accepts an invitation from Syngenta to find out how they're handling the battle against corn rootworms.  Brad Bernhard is the technical product lead for agronomic research at the Malta, IL location for Syngenta.  He explains that one small insect costs farmers literally billions of dollars globally.  Now Syngenta's ready to unleash the latest technology to control the insect through DuraStak.  Paid for by Syngenta.


The Assembly Agriculture Committee held an executive session on Wednesday and moved 3 bills out of committee for further action.  Rep. Clint Moses, vice chair of the committee, explains that some of the items took longer to work through than others.  For example, trying to regulate foreign adversary ownership of agricultural or forestry land in the state.  He says there were a lot of stakeholders that needed to be a part of that conversation.

Data centers have become a routine part of conversations in Wisconsin, including more rural communities.  Ben Jarboe visits with Adam Freihoefer, DNR water section manager, about the recently released 2024 Water Use Report.  It details how water was used in Wisconsin, and agriculture wasn't the biggest consumer.  Freihoefer explains how water use can ebb and flow, depending on a lot of factors.

Nobody in Wisconsin's dairy community can deny - it is tough right now.  Milk prices are low, margins are tight, and there’s a lot of frustration out there. How does Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin view the year farmers just lived through?

That's where the conversation starts with Pam Jahnke and Ben Miller, Vice President of Industry Relations who's recently been named Chief Operating Officer at DFW. Bills don't wait, costs stay high, and the pressures never seem to end. That reality deserves to be acknowledged first, because no amount of talking around it changes what farmers are experiencing day to day.

Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin does not and cannot control milk prices, that's very clear. What can be managed is how Wisconsin dairy shows up in the world. DFW is charged with working to protect demand, strengthen trust, and expand opportunity so that when markets improve — as they eventually do — Wisconsin dairy is positioned to compete and win. That doesn’t fix today’s milk check, but it helps build a foundation for recovery.

Rep. Clint Moses, vice chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee and supporter of AB488, says the bill introduces a legislative fix that allows first responders to use state funds to purchase eco-friendly, soybean-based fire suppressants. The initiative supports local farmers and protects firefighters by replacing PFAS chemicals with a safer alternative that works with existing department equipment. With the bill already through the Senate and facing no public opposition, supporters are now racing to get it to the Governor’s desk before the legislative session ends in March.
