Jonathon Lutz - Portage County Century Farm

Cows? Check. Grilled cheese? Check. Ice cream? You bet! As one of the sweetest traditions at World Dairy Expo, the GEA Farm Technologies ice cream stand marks its 20th year in Madison. Sue Begg, GEA’s Marketing and Communications Manager, is the mastermind behind the stand, spending six months getting everything ready for the big event.

“We serve around 12,000 to 13,000 dishes of ice cream during the four-day show,” says Begg. “With warm weather expected this year, we’re hoping to exceed those numbers.”

Begg works closely with Cedar Crest Ice Cream to ensure they have everything needed. “We pre-order 420 tubs of ice cream,” she explains. In addition to ice cream, cups, and spoons, Begg manages a team of around 200 volunteers, including 135 Wisconsin FFA members who help scoop the ice cream.

Three unique flavors are featured daily, with something to satisfy every sweet tooth.

Indulge in a Scoop of World Dairy Expo Tradition

Wisconsin has selected its four finalists for this year's Leopold Conservation award.  Charitee Seebecker introduces us to one of them.  Glacial Lake Cranberries, one of the oldest cranberry farms in Wisconsin, is celebrating its 151st year of commercial cranberry production. Owned and operated by Mary Brazeau Brown, this historic farm continues to thrive, thanks to its strong commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and conservation efforts. Mary shares more about the practices she uses and how they led her to be a finalist for the Wisconsin Leopold Conservation Award. 

Stu Muck, ag meteorologist, explains some weather curves coming to Wisconsin that World Dairy Expo exhibitors will have to flex with.

Ashley Huhn from the Steffes Group talks to Pam Jahnke about the robust schedule they're amassing of fall/winter auctions.  Their quarterly catalog comes out in a few weeks and Huhn says they've got more than 800 sales to feature this time.  Paid for by Steffes Group.

Canadian cattle that are part of World Dairy Expo this year - but it took a lot to get to Madison.  Brian Carscadden, Canadian exhibitor, explains to Pam Jahnke what tests they had to manage and why testing will require Canadian cattle to stay in Wisconsin longer.

Canadian Cattle Will Stay A Little Longer And Port Strike Irks Market - Heinberg

Farmers in Wisconsin are reporting early soybean yields, with some fields delivering below-average results due to challenging growing conditions earlier this season. Earl Pelak, Grain Originator for Insight FS in Ixonia, shared insights into the ongoing harvest and expectations for this year's yield.

"It's a relatively early start, but we have had a few producers consistently hauling in now," Pelak stated. "For the most part, yields are ranging in the mid-50s, though we've seen a wide spread this year, with some fields as low as 30 and others hitting 68 bushels per acre."
