FMMO Comment Deadline - Friday The 13th - Then What?

Wisconsin corn grower, Shane Goplin, just returned from the summer meeting of the U.S. Grains Council in Salt Lake, Utah.  The goal of the gathering was to continue to find new ways to access international markets for U.S. produced grain.  Bob Bosold talks to Goplin about what take-aways he heard.

The Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival was a success over the weekend at the Jefferson County Fair Park in Jefferson.  One breed that caught a lot of attention was the Leister Longwools.  This rare breed is normally only seen along the east coast.  This year, they decided to hold a national carding event at the sheep festival.  Stephanie Hoff finds out more about the breed and why they picked Wisconsin with breed coordinator, Abi Breed.

World Dairy Expo is coming up the first week of October and Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin wants to be ready to show off all things Wisconsin.  Tina Peterson, communications team member with DFW, talks to Pam Jahnke about the multiple audiences they're targeting with events and demonstrations during the big show.  Paid for by Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin.

WI Corn Grower In Utah And East Coast Sheep In WI

A farm family in Delta Junction, Alaska, has taken on the personal challenge of trying to help the state combat food security.  Bryce Wrigley and his son, Milo, have created the Alaska Flour Company to maximize their 1,700 acres of small grains and cover crops they grow.  Initially it began as a flour milling operation, but has evolved into a packaged goods and bakery operation too.  Bryce explains their business model to Pam Jahnke. 

Landus and Conduit have announced the launch of an unprecedented healthcare program- powered by Momentum Ag, which is designed to meet the needs of farmers and businesses that support farming communities. Landus CEO Matt Carstens says this is a problem that has been highlighted to Landus for some time now, and while others have failed at offering rural healthcare like this in the past, he is excited to get farmers taken care of. 

Dean Ebert with the Helena Agri operations in West Bend, joins Pam Jahnke to discuss what he's seeing with the beginning of silage harvest.  He also's encouraging farms to start soil sampling now.  Paid for by Helena Agri.

Rick Zemlicka’s family sesquicentennial farm in Iowa County, has been a cornerstone of his heritage since his great-great-grandfather purchased the original 80 acres in 1874. Arriving from Bohemia with his parents in 1860, his ancestor expanded the farm to 320 acres over the years. The original farmstead included basic buildings and facilities for a modest mixed operation with cows, pigs, chickens, and a large garden. Despite facing significant challenges, including the tragic loss of his great-great-grandfather’s oldest son in 1895 and hardships during the Great Depression, the farm has persevered. Rick’s great-grandfather rebuilt the barn and house in the early 1920s, and these structures still stand today. Rick reflects fondly on childhood memories, such as playing near his father’s plowing and enjoying time with cousins in the creeks. The farm remains a vital part of his life, and he hopes it will continue to be passed down to future generations.

Alaska Flour Mill Aims For Food Security

As the back-to-school season unfolds, Wisconsin's grocery stores are witnessing distinct trends among consumers. According to Mike Semmann, President & CEO of the Wisconsin Grocers Association, the two words that are top of mind for shoppers this year are "value" and "flexibility."

"Consumers are extremely focused on value this year, much more so than we've seen in past years," Semmann remarked. "Despite the average spend remaining about the same, parents are highly aware of price changes and are looking for ways to make their dollars stretch further."
