Even if you’re procrastinating your June Dairy Month celebrations, there’s a breakfast for you. The 35th annual Waushara County June Dairy Breakfast is on the last day of June – Sunday, the 30th -- at the Hancock Agricultural Research Station. While the dairy breakfast is not at a dairy farm, it will be a great celebration of Wisconsin agriculture featuring door prizes, live music, and local food.

Bill Deppe, co-chair of the Waushara County June Dairy Breakfast Committee, says this is a chance to showcase the diversity of agriculture in the Central Sands.

Troy Fishler, superintendent of the research station, says this is a valuable opportunity to introduce the public to the research happening on-premise.

Dairy Breakfast Highlights All Of Agriculture On June 30

The evening of June 22nd changed the business path for MacFarlane Pheasants.  On that Saturday evening, and F2 tornado tore through a majority of the barns housing MacFarlane's pheasants and partridge birds.

According to Bill MacFarlane, the roofs of their barns, housing approximately 150,000 birds, collapsed, putting their safety at immediate risk. Unfortunately, the staff also had to deal with compromised feeding and watering systems which they needed to keep the remaining birds safe.

The storm also damaged another 16 acres of pens that housed over 15,000 birds, and approximately 5,000 birds escaped the barns, which sustained roof damage.

Today, while debris may remain, MacFarlane says they are back to work taking care of birds and ready to supply customers as if nothing happened.  MacFarlane's is the largest supplier of pheasants in North America, and has been a part of Wisconsin agriculture for 95 years.

Today, the cherry harvest takes us to Door County where we visit with Jim Seaquist of Seaquist Orchards. They care for 170,000 trees across 1,300 acres around Sister Bay. They harvest up to 15 million pounds of cherries each year. Jim says agricultural tourism has allowed his family to continue the farm business. Since the early 1900s, his family has expanded not only in the number of trees but also the number of offerings. Today, you can find their products year-round: pie fillings, jams and jellies, and syrups and sauces, to name a few. Despite early weather challenges, Seaquist says they are expecting a bumper crop. Barney Creek Livestock, operated by fourth-generation rancher Pete Lannon, is making waves in the agricultural community with their innovative and sustainable ranching practices. Lannon, who began his journey by leasing his parents' ranch, has grown the operation into a thriving enterprise known for its grass-fed beef and unique leasing approach. Pete tells Mid-West Farm Report what it’s been like to get to this point.
