Life Saving South Africa has made a call for swimming education to be prioritised as
drowning rates spike in South Africa. The organisation says in the latter half of
November 2024, there was a spate of 21 drownings reported which they had not seen in
previous years. The number of fatal drownings coincided with the emergence of hot weather as well as the close of examinations, schools and universities. During December 2024 to the first week of January 2025 the number of drownings doubled to 42 which consisted of 34 cases of fatal drownings and 8 non- fatal.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has confirmed the resignation of Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi as its Member of Parliament. In a statement, the EFF announced the voluntary
resignations of fighter Yazini Tetyana and fighter Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi from the Parliament Of South Africa. “The EFF has accepted the respective voluntary
requests to be released from deployment of the two Fighters, who have diligently served the organisation in their respective deployments since the EFF has had representation in the legislative sphere,” the party said.

The accounts are contained in court papers submitted to the Constitutional Court in which the miners allege that conditions have become extremely desperate underground since the start
of police operation Vala Umgodi.  The miners have been in an apparent stand-off
with police since late last year.
