A former Team Canada wrestler from Sturgeon Lake First Nation is receiving national recognition for his efforts to grow the sport of wrestling in Canada. 

Cole Sanderson, founder of North Wrestle, has been named a semifinalist in this year's Pow Wow Pitch, Canada's leading pitch competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs. 

Sanderson spoke with MBC’s Joel Willick about North Wrestle and the national recognition.

The Clearwater River Dene Nation says its planned Industry Monitoring Checkpoint is designed to improve communication and transparency—not block responsible resource development—in the western Athabasca Basin. 

The Nation announced last week that it plans to establish the checkpoint on Highway 955 beginning in August. 

John Desjarlais, a spokesperson for the Dene nation, spoke with MBC news about the plans.

At the legislative building on June 24th dignitaries and guests attended the portrait unveiling of former Lieutenant Governor Russell Mirasty, Saskatchewan’s 23rd Lieutenant Governor. 

“I am overwhelmed,” said Mirasty. “It’s just all the memories coming back and thinking about our travels and meeting with people and is really the culmination of that to see the portrait.” 

Mirasty’s family also attended the event, including his young grandson.

As children and families enjoyed a nice day at the North West Leisure Centre splash park, Regina City Police (RPS) officers came and handed out cold treats.  

The initiative started five years ago and is called “Copsicle Day.” 

It is a community engagement initiative where officers visit local parks and spray pads to hand out free popsicles to meet and interact with residents in a casual, positive setting. 

“A friend of mine that I worked with, she actually started it and then I just kind of took it over when she left,” said Constable Richard Claude, with the Cultural and Community Diversity Unit at RPS.

Kayla Maurice is the owner of Karm Collective, an Indigenous wellness and beauty business in Saskatoon. She is one of 120 Indigenous entrepreneurs that have been selected as semi-finalists for the 2026 Pow Wow Pitch competition.  

“I’m a beauty specialist, healer, educator and a mother,” said Maurice.  

She is a member of the Metis Nation and originally from Hay River, Northwest Territories. 

“I applied because I wanted to challenge myself and share the vision behind Karm Collective on the larger platform,” said Maurice. “Pow Wow Pitch is an incredible opportunity to connect with other Indigenous entrepreneurs and gain mentorship, grow my business … it isn’t just about the prize money.”
