Mack Turner has become a cherished part of Acworth’s history through his relentless efforts to preserve it. On August 1, Turner was inducted into Acworth’s Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the city. His dedication is further honored with a plaque at Acworth Depot Park, where he was pivotal in replicating the original railroad depot, now home to the city’s first history center. Turner co-founded the Save Acworth History Foundation, which has documented the town’s history through over 80 oral histories, numerous artifacts, and historic plaques. Despite retiring, Turner remains passionate about local history, believing that understanding the past is vital for the future. He credits the city and its citizens for supporting preservation efforts and hopes the foundation’s work continues to thrive, ensuring Acworth's vibrant legacy endures. His contributions have deeply impacted the community, securing its historical identity for generations to come.

Two Smyrna Police officers were injured, and a suspect was killed during a burglary at Adventure Outdoors. The incident occurred late Friday night when officers attempted to arrest 21-year-old Emilio Aguilar, who fired a rifle, injuring two officers in the leg. Both officers are in stable condition, with one still hospitalized. Three Cobb Police officers, arriving just before the shooting, returned fire, killing Aguilar. No Cobb officers were injured. The GBI is investigating, and the case will be reviewed by the Cobb County District Attorney. Adventure Outdoors expressed support for the officers and their families.

STORY 3: Cobb, Marietta Schools See Improved Results in Math

The 2023-2024 Georgia Math Milestones scores reveal significant improvements in math for Marietta and Cobb County schools. Cobb saw score increases across all levels, while Marietta improved or maintained scores except in third grade. Cobb students outperformed state averages, with Marietta excelling in certain grades. Marietta's Algebra scores showed notable growth, doubling Cobb's and tripling state growth. Both districts surpassed state proficiency levels, with Cobb leading in Algebra. Marietta's diverse student groups, including students with disabilities, also showed strong performance. The new math standards, implemented last year, contributed to these gains, reflecting successful educational strategies.

The plaintiffs claim the bill improperly combines two distinct government entities. Despite the dismissal, the residents have appealed, with oral arguments set for November 6. Cobb County is under a state of emergency as Tropical Storm Helene has caused significant flooding, closing multiple roadways and prompting several flood warnings for areas like Noonday Creek and the Chattahoochee River. Notable road closures include Woodland Brook Drive, Riverside Parkway, and parts of I-75 North. Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services emphasizes, "TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN," urging residents not to travel. The storm, downgraded from a Category 4 hurricane, still poses dangers with wind speeds up to 70 mph. Cobb's Emergency Management Agency advises against wading in storm water and warns that even six inches of water can be hazardous. Emergency crews have conducted multiple water rescues, and essential workers are actively responding to the crisis. Mount Paran Christian has appointed Connie Arnold as interim head football coach for the rest of the season, following Coach Matt Ely's departure to address a personal matter. Ely, who also serves as assistant athletic director, has led the team to a 5-1 record this season. The school supports Ely during this time, though it's unclear if his leave is temporary or permanent. Arnold, a long-time staff member and current head wrestling coach, will lead the team, ensuring continuity and support for the players. The team is preparing for their upcoming game against Whitefield Academy.

A 34-year-old cold rape case has been solved with DNA evidence, leading to the conviction of Christopher Lee Milton for a 1990 assault in Cobb County.
