Host of Talking Point, Steven Chia, who has previously regaled us with tales of his investigations into bread, instant noodles and bubble tea, joins us to talk about FRIED CHICKEN!
Why can't Singaporeans get enough of it? Just how many varieties are out there in the market? Is there such a thing as healthy fried chicken? And what happened to Steven when he subjected himself to a Talking Point experiment to eat fried chicken everyday for 2 weeks straight?
Steve gives us a little taster of what to expect in his 2-part Talking Point special - catch it this week (15 April) & next (Thurs 22 April), 9.30pm on Channel 5 or via CNA!
It's goal nine or five. Sounds good, feels good, and I'll make an Gargi today is Steve Chia, host of Talking Point, which you can catch on CNN and Channel five. And in his latest two parter, he agrees to eat fried chicken every day for 14 days, all in the name of science and investigative journalism. Of course, the two weeks of nothing but fried chicken. That sounds mad, but also, I have to admit it sounds yummy. Actually, I'm getting shades of Morgan Spurlock's documentary Super Size Me, where you know he ate nothing but McDonald's every day for a month. We saw what that did to him, but tell us what your fried chicken experience was like.
Oh yeah, what he did is just just too crazy for me. I guess you could see I would have chicken down. OK. So when I first started with this experiment, I was like, You know, Hey, this is great. I get to eat the yummy fried chicken and get paid for it. I'm loving this. So one day I tried Korean. The next day was American style that I had a bit of Taiwanese. I mean, I actually discovered that we more chicken stores in this country, so much so that I could try something different each and every day. We like variety. But then came day three, where the novelty really did wear off. Oh, you know, the thought of eating fried chicken yet again didn't sound so appealing. In fact, on some days, I felt really uncomfortable after a fried chicken meal. Yeah, at the time, I felt like they kind of almost just drank a can of oil. Yeah, of course. You know, you really eat fried chicken by itself. So the french fries, the mashed potato and the coleslaw. Then you add on your barbecue sauce, your cheese sauce, your chili sauce. Oh, I recall looking at the food one day as it lay in front of me, and I thought to myself, What have I gotten myself into?
Actually, I'm still finding it hard to sympathize.
But hey, I mean, I did one because you couldn't write a thought, so it was too late to make any kind of an exit. Oh dear, I sorry, I just can't resist these really bad puns.
So what happened after all that fried chicken feast?
So I stuck through my 14 days, and yes, it did have an effect on my body. And let's just say the results were were not too positive. So if you watched the show, all will be revealed.
OK. After all that, pardon the pun, any takeaways for us?
Oh yeah. Oh boy, we had so much left over after each shoot. I mean that we always had literal takeaways. And I guess let me just end on. One of the other takeaways I got was that fried chicken is a tasty meal. But when you really think about it, why are you eating it, OK? You know, and if you really want to eat it, just be aware why you're eating it, because I don't think there's really a healthy way to do it.
Oh, man, that's not what I wanted to hear,
even though we did kind of try to do that with a special tasting experiment that we did with a bunch of guests. So this is in part two of the show where I worked with a chef to come up with our own healthier version of fried chicken that hopefully would taste as good. And, you know, we got people to eat it and let us know if they would be willing to switch to that kind of fried chicken and if they would be willing to pay a premium for it.
OK, OK, I'm interested to see how people rate at your healthy version.
So the results were also quite interesting, so that comes up in part two of the show.
That's next Thursday, right?
This is a two part special which will air on the 15th and 22nd of April, and those are Thursday nights at 9:30pm on Channel five. Oh yes,
starting tonight,
of course, are also run on Friday evenings on CNN. Or you can just pop over to Mi Watch Dot S.G. or even on YouTube, where we often upload all our talking point episodes.
OK, great. Thanks for that, Steve. One last question and this is one I always ask my guest Where do you go for good McCone? We're going to get a delicious recommendation next from our foul foodie friend Steve Chia of Talking Point. Stay tuned.
