FRIED CHICKEN VS TALKING POINT'S STEVE CHIA (PART 1)

Published Apr 15, 2021, 3:00 AM

Host of Talking Point, Steven Chia, who has previously regaled us with tales of his investigations into bread, instant noodles and bubble tea, joins us to talk about FRIED CHICKEN!

Why can't Singaporeans get enough of it? Just how many varieties are out there in the market? Is there such a thing as healthy fried chicken? And what happened to Steven when he subjected himself to a Talking Point experiment to eat fried chicken everyday for 2 weeks straight?

Steve gives us a little taster of what to expect in his  2-part Talking Point special - catch it this week (15 April) & next (Thurs 22 April), 9.30pm on Channel 5 or via CNA!

It's Denise with you on gold nine or five. Sounds good, feels good, and on this tasty Thursday, we have our guest and foodie friend, also my colleague Steve Chia from Talking Point.

Hi, Steve. Hey, Denise. Always a pleasure to come on the show. So I hear

you're covering a very interesting and tasty topic this week and next.

It's not just a tasty, but also a crispy, crunchy topping that I literally sank my teeth into. Oh, intriguing.

I'm all about the crispy and crunchy. Previously, we've had really fun chats about your delicious investigations into bread, instant noodles, and you even did a bubble tea episode for talking points. Or what will you be eating and investigating this time round?

This time it's one dish that just about anyone, anywhere in the world loves. We're talking fried chicken. Yes, American style Korean, Taiwanese. I mean, every culture has fried chicken and you know, we've got them all here in Singapore. In fact, companies like Grab Food and Foodpanda have reported that they've seen a 70 percent increase in fried chicken orders from 2019 to 2020.

Oh, that's a big increase.

But at the same time, you know how we're all trying to get healthier these days, right? So I mean, what's going on? That's what we were asking. Why do we keep coming back for more of this fried chicken, even though we know that it isn't the most healthy thing to do? And what is it about fried chicken that keeps us hooked?

I want to know, too.

So we got a whole bunch of fried chicken from some of the most popular stores here in Singapore, and I send them all to a lab for testing because I wanted to find out just how much sodium and fat is in a typical portion that we eat. And let me just say that when I saw the results, well, I was pretty shocked. Oh, I mean, I know it's bad, right? But this bad, you got to watch the show for the results. You know how people always say talk is cheap, cheap, cheap. I couldn't resist that, you could pun. But my boss then asked me and said, Hey Steve, how about you eat some fried chicken every day for two weeks and we'll see what it does to your body?

Oh my goodness, that is nuts.

I thought really long and hard for about five seconds. Is it? Yeah, sure. OK.

So you agree to put yourself through this extremely foul. I get it. Foul experiment.

So, yes, I eat fried chicken every day for two weeks.

Do stay tuned. We're going to find out what happens when a man decides to eat fried chicken every day for 14 consecutive days. Steve Chia of Talking Point will be back to fill us in on all the deep fried details.
