A book under the tree can become a favorite bedtime story, a connection to a child’s culture, or the beginning of a lifelong love of reading. This holiday season, Madison Reading Project’s Community Book Drive runs November 10 through December 10, 2026, giving our community an opportunity to put that experience into more children’s hands.

Rowan from Madison Reading Project joined DJ Fusion on 93.1 JAMZ’s Fusion in the Afternoons to talk about the annual drive, the importance of family literacy, and how people across Madison can help.

Bringing Books to Families During the Holidays

The Community Book Drive helps Madison Reading Project provide books for holiday gifts and winter break reading. During a concentrated stretch of holiday giving, Rowan says the organization expects to distribute approximately 15,000 books in about two weeks, potentially more.

That effort gives families access to a selection of books so they can choose something that matches their children’s interests. Having that choice helps make each gift personal, whether a child loves a particular cartoon, wants to explore something new, or connects with a character who looks like them.

Books remaining after the holiday season will help restock Madison Reading Project’s Book Center for 2027, supporting its work throughout the year.

Diverse Children’s Books That Inspire Excitement

Madison Reading Project works to provide books that children are excited to open. That includes diverse stories, books in languages families speak at home, current releases, and hardcover editions whenever possible.

Representation matters. Seeing familiar experiences, cultures, and families in a story can help children connect with reading. Discovering different perspectives can also introduce them to a world beyond their own.

As Rowan explained during the interview, “Literacy is a family activity.”

Reading together creates opportunities for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other caregivers to connect with children. A donated book can become part of those shared moments long after the holidays are over.

How to Support the Community Book Drive

There are several ways to support Madison Reading Project’s Community Book Drive:

Donate new books. Visit the organization’s website for online book selection options and information about participating bookstores.

Make a financial donation. Let the Madison Reading Project team select books to support its giving efforts.

Create a fundraising page. Invite friends, family, or coworkers to contribute together.

Book distribution will begin by the end of November. Book donations should be collected by December 10 so the team has them available for its busy schedule of giving events. Financial fundraising continues through the end of the year as book distribution carries on through December.

Help Madison Share the Gift of Reading

Madison Reading Project Community Book Drive 2026: Give Books, Spread Joy

The fourth annual Black Film Festival returns to Madison, Wisconsin, November 19 through 22, 2026, bringing together Black cinema, community conversation, nostalgic favorites, and new voices. Presented by the Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership Development and Justified Anger: Courses, the festival celebrates Black joy, resilience, art, education, and culture across three Madison locations.

Siobhan Jackson joined Fusion on 93.1 JAMZ to discuss the festival, its growing community impact, and why creating space for Black storytelling matters. What began as an opportunity for volunteer engagement has grown into a community staple, with screenings that invite audiences to laugh, reflect, and discover something new.

Black Joy and Black Storytelling Take Center Stage

This year’s Madison Black Film Festival brings familiar movies together with independent films, short films, and video essays from Black creators. The lineup makes room for holiday comedy, sports drama, Black horror, and conversations about representation and the Black experience.

For Jackson, holding part of the festival at The Center for Black Excellence and Culture represents an exciting next chapter. After watching the space take shape, bringing the festival through its doors feels especially meaningful.

The festival welcomes people to participate while keeping Black voices and experiences at its center. Jackson encouraged attendees to embrace a space where Black joy can be expressed freely. Come ready to listen, learn, enjoy the films, and respect the community the festival celebrates.

Opening Night Features Alabama Brawl and Support for Nehemiah

Doors open at 5 p.m. for cocktail hour, followed by Alabama Brawl: A Documentary & Talkback at 6:15 p.m. Live music and bar service begin at 7:30 p.m.

In the interview, Jackson described the Montgomery boat brawl as a significant cultural moment for Black Americans, making the documentary a fitting starting point for discussion.

Opening night also launches fundraising leading toward Nehemiah’s 35th anniversary in 2027, supporting the continuation of its community work. This evening requires separate registration from the free festival screenings.

Midwest Mujeres: Finding Your Voice Through Storytelling | Voices & Dreams Live

A pet’s cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. From treatment costs to difficult decisions and the emotional weight of the journey, families often need support beyond the veterinarian’s office.

Beth Viney from Czar’s Promise joined DJ Fusion on 93.1 JAMZ’s Fusion in the Afternoons to share the story behind the organization and preview its eighth annual Inspiring Hope Walk.

The community event takes place Sunday, October 11, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. It brings together animal lovers to celebrate pets facing cancer, remember those who have passed away and support families navigating a diagnosis.

The Promise Behind Czar’s Promise

During the interview, Beth shared how her beloved therapy dog, Czar, inspired the organization’s mission.

Czar spent years serving the community through animal assisted therapy. In 2012, he was diagnosed with bone cancer in a rear leg. Following an amputation and chemotherapy, he returned to his therapy work and lived another 19 months before passing away in 2013.

Beth made him a promise: Somehow, she would find a way to help other families hearing the devastating news that their dog or cat had cancer.

That promise became a mission built around compassion, education and financial support.

Helping Families Facing Pet Cancer

Beth explained that a cancer diagnosis creates challenges far beyond treatment itself. Families must coordinate appointments, understand their options and manage expenses while processing what the diagnosis means for an animal they love.

Czar’s Promise helps families navigate that journey with emotional, educational and financial support. Its mission also includes funding companion animal and pediatric cancer research.

During the conversation, Fusion highlighted the more than 300 pets and families the organization has helped. For Beth, the impact comes down to giving families more opportunities to enjoy birthdays, holidays, vacations and everyday moments together.

What to Expect at the Inspiring Hope Walk

Beth described the walk as a celebration filled with connection, remembrance and plenty of happy dogs. People are welcome to attend with or without a dog.

Activities discussed in the interview include:

A silent auction

Community partner booths

Dog enrichment activities

Music and food trucks

Emcee John Urban from Big Dreamers United

This year, dogs who have faced or are facing cancer will wear bright yellow bandanas identifying them as heroes. Beth encouraged attendees to meet their families, hear their stories and offer encouragement.

Those small conversations can mean a great deal to someone navigating a pet’s cancer journey.

Czar’s Promise Inspiring Hope Walk Returns to Fitchburg October 11

The River Food Pantry serves thousands of people across Dane County who need help putting food on the table and accessing essential household supplies. On Saturday, October 3, the Madison-area community has another easy way to help.

Donations for Donuts returns to Monona for its seventh year, collecting food, personal care products, infant supplies and monetary donations for The River Food Pantry.

The drive-through donation event takes place Saturday, October 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Witkins Realty, 5320 Monona Drive in Monona, Wisconsin.

The concept is simple: bring a donation for The River Food Pantry and get a donut as a thank-you.

Helping The River Food Pantry Meet a Growing Community Need

The River Food Pantry provides food and other essential resources to people throughout Dane County. With its new facility providing additional capacity, the organization has more room to serve the community, but the need for those resources remains significant.

Justin Witkins of Witkins Realty joined DJ Fusion on 93.1 JAMZ to talk about Donations for Donuts and why supporting The River continues to be the purpose behind the annual event.

“There’s no shortage of a need in our community,” Witkins said. “We’re trying to raise money or raise food and supplies for those in our community that need a little bit of help this time of year.”

As colder weather approaches, supporting local organizations like The River becomes especially important for families and individuals already struggling to make ends meet.

What Can You Donate to The River Food Pantry?

While nonperishable food is welcome, Donations for Donuts also highlights necessities that people may not immediately think about when making a food pantry donation.

Some of the most helpful donations include:
Infant formula and baby supplies
Diapers
Deodorant
Toothpaste and other personal care products
Nonperishable food and canned goods
Monetary donations

There is no donation too small. Whether you arrive with a few personal care products, diapers, several cases of food or make a financial contribution, it all helps The River Food Pantry continue serving people in our community.

Drive Through, Donate and Grab a Donut

Donations for Donuts was created during the pandemic as a way to support The River Food Pantry while also highlighting local small businesses.

Seven years later, it has grown into an annual community tradition.

The event is designed to make donating easy. If you're short on time, simply drive through, hand off your donation and grab a donut. If you have more time, you're welcome to stick around.

Donuts will come from several Madison-area bakeries, including Lane's Bakery, Greenbush Bakery and Bloom Bake Shop, with options available for different dietary needs.

The event will also feature music, activities and yard games for kids.

Witkins said the event has distributed roughly 20 to 25 dozen donuts during a typical year, with the continued generosity of the community keeping Donations for Donuts going.

“It is humbling every single year, the outpouring of support for The River Food Pantry,” he said.

Sun Prairie native Skitz Kraven is bringing the Mind of a Killer Tour home to the Madison area with a stop at the Majestic Theatre on Friday, September 11, and he stopped by 93.1 JAMZ to talk with DJ Fusion about the tour, his connection with fans, his music and what people can expect when he takes the stage.

The Madison show comes as Skitz is already several dates into a tour that will take him to more than 20 cities across the country. But playing the Majestic carries a little extra meaning for an artist who grew up in the area.

“I grew up staring at that marquee walking by it,” Skitz said during the interview.

Now, his name is on it.

From the High Noon Saloon to the Majestic Theatre

Skitz Kraven’s return to Madison follows his previous sold out performance at the High Noon Saloon. This time, he’s stepping into the larger Majestic Theatre, with early ticket sales giving him reason to be optimistic about another strong hometown crowd.

For Skitz, however, the Mind of a Killer Tour isn’t designed to simply be a concert.

He described the roughly 90 minute performance as something closer to a “therapy session,” moving the audience through different emotions over the course of the show.

“There’s a lot of highs and there’s a lot of lows,” he explained. “It’s like a rollercoaster throughout the hour and a half that I’m on stage.”

The set combines deeply emotional, mental health focused records with high energy songs built to get the crowd moving.

“People are going to cry. People are going to laugh. It’s just a true performance.”

And Skitz has a simple measurement for whether he’s done his job.

“If you’re not sweating by the end of this show when you’re walking out, I didn’t do my job.”

Music That Became Therapy

Mental health has become an important part of both Skitz Kraven’s music and his relationship with his audience.

What originally began as a personal creative outlet has grown into something much bigger.

“It was therapy for me, and now it’s therapy for other people. Full circle.”

That connection extends beyond the records themselves. Skitz talked about intentionally remaining accessible to the people supporting his music, remembering what it felt like when he was a young fan reaching out to artists he admired and never receiving a response.

“If I open your message, I respond to it because I know what it’s like to be that kid that reached out to his favorite artists and got ghosted.”

Today, he sees himself as a voice for people who may not always feel heard and wants his audience to have a space where they can connect without judgment.

“I’m now a voice for a lot of people that are not heard, and I can’t stop. I just got to put on the gas.”

Skitz Kraven Continues to Push Horrorcore Forward

Skitz Kraven has developed a distinct lane through horrorcore, combining a hip hop foundation with darker imagery, storytelling and cinematic visuals.

Interestingly, he didn’t originally set out to make music that fit into the genre. Fans began applying the horrorcore label to what he was already creating.

“I was just making what I call a Skitz Kraven movie,” he explained.

Since then, he has embraced the niche while putting his own spin on it and introducing its horror influenced elements to a wider audience, including listeners discovering his work through platforms like TikTok.

The cinematic side of his music isn't accidental either.

Skitz directs his own music videos and writes treatments for many of them, working with a creative team to bring his ideas to life. Eventually, he hopes to take that experience beyond music videos and further into filmmaking.

“I want to focus on film, and I have a lot of stories I want to tell and a lot of stories I want to write.”

For now, the videos serve as a preview of where that creative direction could eventually take him.

New Single “Life Without Color” Tackles Depression

During his visit to 93.1 JAMZ, Skitz also introduced his new single, “Life Without Color,” one of the most personal and emotional songs he has released.

The record was written during what he described as a deep period of depression, and revisiting it can still bring back difficult memories.

At the same time, he says listeners have been connecting strongly with the song.

“It’s helping a lot of people right now. People are really resonating with it.”

He hopes “Life Without Color” can reach people dealing with depression themselves as well as friends and family members trying to understand what someone close to them may be experiencing.

Supporting Local Artists Along the Way

Even as the Mind of a Killer Tour travels across the country, Skitz has made it a priority to create opportunities for artists in each market.

Rather than filling every opening slot with the same touring acts, he encourages promoters to give local performers a chance to get in front of their hometown audience.

It comes from remembering his own experience as an emerging artist trying to earn opportunities to perform.

“I want to give local talent opportunities to perform in front of their hometown.”

Following Madison, the tour heads to Minneapolis before continuing through cities including Iowa City, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, Nashville, Orlando and Dallas, among other stops.

Skitz Kraven at the Majestic Theatre in Madison

Skitz Kraven’s Mind of a Killer Tour hits the Majestic Theatre in downtown Madison on Friday, September 11, 2026.

Doors are expected to open at 8 PM, with Skitz Kraven joined by local opening talent.

Fans looking for tickets are encouraged to purchase directly through Skitz Kraven’s official website or through the venue rather than third party resellers. Skitz also offers a meet and greet VIP option for fans who want the opportunity to meet him in person.

For an artist who grew up walking past the Majestic Theatre marquee, Friday night represents more than another date on a 20 plus city tour.

It’s a hometown full circle moment.

And when Skitz Kraven walks out and sees his name above one of downtown Madison’s most recognizable music venues, he already knows it might hit him.

“It’ll probably get me choked up a little bit when I see it.”

Listen to 93.1 JAMZ for more local music, artist interviews and Madison entertainment, and hear Skitz Kraven’s new single “Life Without Color.”

Tour: Mind of a Killer Tour
Date: Friday, September 11, 2026
Venue: Majestic Theatre
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Doors: Approximately 8 PM

Experience Five Days of Family Fun at Sun Prairie Corn Fest

If there's one event that perfectly captures the spirit of a Wisconsin summer, it's Sun Prairie Corn Fest.

Returning this August, the 73rd annual Corn Fest will once again transform Sun Prairie into one of the state's most popular destinations for live entertainment, carnival rides, community celebrations, and, of course, plenty of sweet corn.

With an estimated 75,000 visitors expected over five days, Corn Fest continues to be one of the largest community festivals in Wisconsin.

Whether you're coming for the parade, the live music, the carnival, or the famous corn, here's everything you need to know about Sun Prairie Corn Fest 2026.

When Is Sun Prairie Corn Fest 2026?

Corn Fest kicks off on Wednesday, August 19, with a parade through downtown Sun Prairie.

The celebration continues throughout the week before moving to Angel Park Speedway for a full weekend of food, music, entertainment, and family activities.

Why Is Sun Prairie Called the Corn Capital?

Corn Fest began 73 years ago when local business leaders wanted to create an event that would attract visitors and encourage people to support local businesses.

At the time, Sun Prairie was home to a canning company located near downtown. Community leaders approached the owner with an idea.

What if they built an entire festival around corn?

The owner agreed and provided freshly steamed corn for festival visitors.

Originally held behind the Bank of Sun Prairie, the event quickly outgrew its first location. Within a few years, Corn Fest moved to Angel Park, where it continues to thrive today.

Over seven decades later, Corn Fest has evolved into one of Wisconsin's signature summer traditions.

How Much Corn Is Served at Corn Fest?

The answer is simple.

A lot.

Festival organizers estimate that 80 tons of corn will be served throughout the weekend.

That's the equivalent of four semi-truck loads of corn spread across two days.

Whether you prefer your corn grilled, buttered, seasoned, or served in a completely different style, you'll find plenty of options throughout the festival grounds.

Corn Fest Isn't Just About Food

One of the most impressive aspects of Corn Fest is that it's much more than a summer celebration.

The entire festival operates as a fundraiser.

Every dollar spent at the festival helps support nonprofit organizations that continue to make a difference throughout the Sun Prairie community.

Organizations benefiting from Corn Fest include:
Sun Prairie Chamber of Commerce
Sun Prairie Lions Club
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
American Legion
Knights of Columbus
Exchange Club

Additional nonprofit organizations also participate throughout the festival grounds, creating even more opportunities for visitors to support community initiatives.

A Festival Built Around Community

The organizations behind Corn Fest have one thing in common.

They're deeply connected to the community.

For more than seven decades, Corn Fest has combined family entertainment with community investment, creating an event that supports local programs while bringing residents and visitors together.

It's a tradition that continues to grow year after year.

Plan Your Visit to Sun Prairie Corn Fest 2026

If you're looking for one final summer celebration before fall arrives, Corn Fest offers something for everyone.

From carnival rides and live music to community events and 80 tons of sweet corn, there's no shortage of reasons to spend a few days in Sun Prairie.

Sun Prairie Corn Fest 2026: Everything You Need to Know About Wisconsin's Biggest Corn Celebration

For six decades, the East Madison Community Center has been a place where neighbors become family. From youth programs and summer camps to senior activities, food assistance, and community events, the center has helped thousands of Madison residents build lasting connections.

DJ Fusion recently sat down with Executive Director Regina and longtime community advocate Tari to talk about the East Madison Community Center's upcoming 60th Anniversary Celebration and the impact the organization continues to make every day.

The free community celebration takes place Saturday, July 25, from Noon until 4:00 PM at the East Madison Community Center, 8 Straubel Court in Madison. Everyone is invited to attend, whether you've been connected to the center for years or you're discovering it for the first time.

Guests can enjoy an afternoon packed with family friendly activities including:
Live music with DJ Fusion
Petting zoo
Dunk tank
Food and Culver's Frozen Custard
Community partner booths
EMCC Trivia Bingo
Building tours
Fire truck visits
Children's activities and face painting
A special community welcome at 1:00 PM

One of the highlights of the event will be the EMCC Memory Tree, where current and former visitors can share their favorite memories from the past 60 years. Those stories will become a permanent installation inside the community center, preserving the history and impact of the organization for future generations.

During the interview, Tari reflected on growing up at the East Madison Community Center and remembered neighborhood block parties where the Madison Fire Department would take kids for rides around the neighborhood on a fire truck. While those days may be gone, the fire department will once again be part of this year's celebration by bringing a truck for families to explore.

Beyond the anniversary celebration, the East Madison Community Center continues to serve residents of all ages throughout the year. Current programs include youth summer camp, educational programming, a daily walk in food pantry, family services, senior programming, recreation opportunities, community meetings, and event space for local organizations.

Executive Director Regina says the mission has remained the same for 60 years: creating a welcoming place where everyone in the community belongs.

The 60th Anniversary Celebration is made possible through the support of TruStage, MG&E, North Street Neighborhood Association, and UW Credit Union, along with many dedicated volunteers and community partners.

If you've never visited the East Madison Community Center, this anniversary celebration is the perfect opportunity to meet the people behind the organization, explore the facility, and see firsthand why it has remained such an important part of Madison for six decades.

Discover Wisconsin's Underground Railroad History at the Milton House Museum

Wisconsin played a much bigger role in American history than many people realize, and one of the best places to experience that story is just a short drive from Madison.

DJ Fusion sits down with Julie Marquardt from the Milton House Museum, Wisconsin's only certified Underground Railroad site open to the public.

Built in 1844, four years before Wisconsin officially became a state, the Milton House originally served as a stagecoach inn before becoming an important stop along the Underground Railroad. Today, visitors can walk through the historic inn and even travel through the original underground tunnel that once helped freedom seekers move safely through Wisconsin.

During the interview, Julie explains how the museum preserves this important chapter of American history while giving visitors an immersive experience that goes far beyond a traditional museum tour.

The conversation also highlights the museum's Signature Event on Saturday, September 26 at the Janesville Performing Arts Center.

The evening features:
The internationally renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Milwaukee's Ko-Thi Dance Company, celebrating African, Caribbean, and African American culture through music, dance, and storytelling.

Because the Milton House Museum operates as a nonprofit, events like this help preserve one of Wisconsin's most important historical landmarks while continuing to educate future generations.

If you're looking for a meaningful day trip from Madison or want to experience a unique piece of Wisconsin history, the Milton House Museum offers guided tours Tuesday through Sunday throughout the summer.

School supply costs continue to rise, and for many military and veteran families, preparing children for the upcoming school year can create significant financial stress. That's why Stand Down Madison is asking the community to come together for its Supplies for Success school supply drive.

The initiative is designed to provide backpacks and essential classroom supplies to children from military and veteran households throughout Dane County. Organizers are collecting commonly needed items such as pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, folders, binders, markers, and other educational supplies.

According to Stand Down Madison, the average cost of school supplies now exceeds $100 per child before families even begin paying for extracurricular activities, sports, theater programs, and other school related expenses. The organization hopes the community can help reduce that burden by donating supplies before the July 13 collection deadline.

Donations can be dropped off at participating One Community Bank locations throughout Dane County, at Verona Safety's Madison location, or purchased directly through the organization's Amazon Wish List. Every contribution helps ensure local children have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom.

The collected supplies will be distributed during the Supplies for Success event on July 16 at the Dane County Fair. Veterans will receive free admission, while fairgoers can enjoy discounted admission before 3 PM. The event will also feature community resources, therapy dogs, a blood drive, free donuts from Greenbush Bakery, and opportunities to connect with organizations serving veterans and their families.

Stand Down Madison works year round to support veterans experiencing homelessness and those at risk of homelessness. Through community partnerships, the organization helps connect veterans with housing, employment, legal assistance, healthcare resources, and other critical services.

As back to school season approaches, Supplies for Success offers a simple way for the community to give back to the men and women who served our country and the families who support them every day.

For decades, the global music industry has looked to the East and West Coasts for the blueprint of hip-hop. But according to Manku and Jinx of Pyramidal Productions, the real "foundation" of the genre has a deep, often overlooked connection to the Badger State.

In a recent sit-down with DJ Fusion on 93.1 Jams, the duo discussed their mission to spotlight Wisconsin’s monumental contributions to music history through their latest project: "Hip-Hop in Madison: Our Story, Our Culture, Our Future."

More Than a Coast: Wisconsin’s Influence Behind the Scenes

While Wisconsin might not always get the "on-camera" credit, its influence is woven into the fabric of the industry. From the 608 to the 414, Wisconsin artists and producers have been "getting busy" since the culture first figured itself out in the 80s and 90s.

"Even though our coast isn't represented, we are influential behind the scenes in a great way," says Manku. "From Beyoncé to Dr. Dre, Wisconsin is in the midst of it all."

Local Legends and Global Hits

This highlights a "who’s who" of Wisconsin talent that has shaped the Billboard charts and the evolution of rap:

Clyde Stubblefield: Often called the "foundation of hip-hop," his drumming remains the most sampled in music history.

Preserving the History: The Wisconsin Historical Society Exhibit

To celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, Pyramidal Productions has curated an immersive experience at the Wisconsin Historical Society. This isn't just a collection of facts; it’s a tactile journey through time.

The exhibit features:

Vintage Tech: From cassettes and Walkmans to VHS tapes, giving the next generation a hands-on look at how the music was originally consumed.

Interactive Art: A community graffiti board and a custom 3D lenticular poster.

"Lead Between the Rhymes": Insights into the upcoming movie produced by Pyramidal Productions that documents this rich history.

The Movement: Past, Present, and Future

The goal of the movement—and the upcoming community town hall—is to stabilize the culture. By discussing the past and envisioning the future, Pyramidal Productions aims to ensure the Wisconsin hip-hop scene has longevity for the next 50 years and beyond.

As DJ Fusion noted, "This isn't just about Madison; Madison is a piece of the puzzle. This is about the culture that our entire state—the 608, the 715, the 920—brings together."
