South African Tuberculosis research has redefined the way the diseased is treated globally. The findings of BEAT Tuberculosis, the South African clinical study that began in a research unit in Gqeberha, has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). This is the highest-ranked medical journal in the world. The data of this shifted the standard treatment of TB that required a seven-drug regimen administered over a minimum of nine months. BEAT Tuberculosis was able to utilise a regimen of four to five medications administered over six months.
