A former principal of Gandhi Mandela Nursing Academy and St Mary's Hospital Nursing College, Khan holds a master's degree in nursing from UKZN and was named Health Sciences Researcher of the Year in 2006. She is also the founder of the Chatsworth Dancing Pencils Writing Academy, promoting writing and creativity in the community.
