By Newsbreak Producer Taliesha Naidoo - The South African Society of Psychiatrists is warning against the use of psilocybin mushrooms, commonly known as magic mushrooms, as a cure for depression. Psychiatrist and member of SASOP, Dr Melané van Zyl says the hallucinogenic properties of psilocybin carry substantial risks of harmful side-effects. Dr van Zyl says its safety and efficacy as a medical treatment has not yet been proven and could pose a major risk to people with depression or underlying mental health conditions...
