By Newsbreak Producer Hoosen Ebrahim - South Africa could soon do away with physical vehicle licence discs as authorities move towards a digital system that relies on number plate recognition. The Road Traffic Management Corporation says the change is aimed at tackling widespread fraud involving fake licence discs and illegally registered vehicles. Traffic officers will be equipped with new handheld devices capable of instantly verifying vehicle information by scanning number plates. The technology will also support the rollout of the AARTO traffic enforcement system from July. The announcement comes amid revelations of deep-rooted corruption at licensing centres and the sale of fraudulent driving licences.
