By Newsbreak Producer Matthew Veeran - A new study from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom has found a significant link between anaemia in mothers and an increased risk of congenital heart disease in their babies. The research, funded by the British Heart Foundation, indicates that the likelihood of a child being born with this condition is 47% higher if the mother is anaemic early in pregnancy. Experts suggest that widespread iron supplementation for women trying to conceive could be a game changer in preventing this common birth defect.
