A memorial monument has been unveiled in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban, in honour of slain whistleblower, Babita Deokaran. The senior finance official at the Gauteng Deaprtment of Health flagged suspicious, irregular and fraudulent transactions at Tembisa Hospital estimated to be over R850 million. She was assassinated outside her Johannesburg home in August 2021. Her family, government leaders and civil society organizations, gathered for the unveiling on Women's Day. The latest engagement, led by Bishop Dalton Adams, is focusing on safety concerns and the impact of the violence on innocent residents, including children and teenagers. Residents are calling for urgent intervention to address the continued shootings and loss of lives. Bishop Adams says a multi-faceted approach is needed to tackle the problem .......

Westbury community convene talks amid escalation of gang-related violence

By Newsbreak Producer Tashlan Naidoo - Residents across the Cape Flats are living in fear, saying mass shootings are becoming an increasingly common occurrence in their communities. 11 people were killed in separate shooting incidents in Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha this weekend, leaving residents deeply concerned about their safety. Police are following up all leads and have offered a 100-thousand-rand reward for information leading to arrests in the Langa and Gugulethu shootings. Deputy Chairperson of the Mitchell's Plain United Residents Association, Norman Jantjies, says the deployment of the army has done little to curb gang violence, while community trust in law enforcement remains extremely low...
