The patient was travelling aboard the MV Hondius, which had sailed from Argentina en route to the Canary Islands, stopping at multiple remote destinations. Health officials say the patient's condition deteriorated despite onboard and interim treatment, prompting an emergency airlift to a private facility in Sandton. The virus, transmitted primarily through contact with infected rodents, is considered rare but potentially fatal. Authorities are also monitoring two additional passengers who presented with severe respiratory symptoms during the voyage.
