The brawl that forced Durban's Centenary Secondary School to close this week was not racially sparked. That's the confirmation from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Basic Education. The Department met with school management and parents at a public meeting at the school last night. It emerged that the incident escalated as a result of a case of misconduct at the school. This year is the 30th anniversary of the South African Constitution. It's also 60 years since the United Nations adopted the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), marking a pivotal moment in the global fight against racism. And so on this Human Rights Day which is also the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination- it's a critical moment to take stock of global human rights. That's the assessment of Abigail Noko, the United Nations Human Rights Regional Representative, Southern Africa office. She spoke to Newsbreak about how these significant anniversaries must inspire a greater committment to Human Rights
