The Electoral Commission launched it's Communication Campaign launch held in Johannesburg this week- in a strong bif to make a positive impact on voter participation.

But are South Africans up-beat about going to the polls?

Well according to the Human Sciences Research Council's Voter Participation Survey- support for democracy is at a historic low, with preference for democracy falling  from around 65% in mid-2000s to 36% in 2025/26.

As Election Season commences we discussed this data- to get a sense of where the electorate finds itself ahead of Local Government Elections 2026.

That's according to the The South African NCD Alliance (SANCD Alliance) ahead of World No Tobacco Day. The health body is raising this awareness under the global theme of 'Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.' Globally about 15 million teenagers are using vaping devices. The innovative marketing of these products is becoming a cause for concern for activists- who claim that this marketing gimmick is getting young people addicted to tobacco habits that will have harmful effects on their health. By Newsbreak Producer, Tashlan Naidoo - Today marks the start of Child Protection Week in South Africa, and leading stakeholders are in Chatsworth south of Durban highlighting concern around an increase in child abuse cases. The campaign was held at Alencon primary school, where educational programmes were held for learners. Child Protection Week forms part of the broader Child Protection Month observed in May under the theme "Working together in ending violence against children". SABC reporter, Gcinokuhle Malinga was there and brings us an update....

The accused who were arrested at the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo, made a brief appearance at the Musina magistrate's court today. The Border Management Authority says a tip-off from informers led to the truck's interception from Malawi. The truck was detected during a thorough cargo scanning process on Wednesday, making this one of the largest drug consignment in the history of the country.
