Organisations who are part of the baby saver initiative are currently in a legal dispute with the Department of Social Development over the use of baby-saving boxes. The baby box is an alarmed structure -- built into the side of a building that allows a parent to anonymously and safely give away a newborn. However, the department argues that the use of these boxes is illegal, because it is not provided for in the Children's Act. It further argues that the practice could encourage more mothers to abandon their babies and has proposed a ban, inviting public comments on the matter.
