Hello, Welcome to long Shots Golf podcast here on the Visa Podcast Network.

Matt Brown, Wes Reynolds coming to you.

I know, I know it's football season, but guess what we're gonna give you the goods Anyway over here on the golf side of things, West does his write ups over at vson dot com. Be sure and go and check out the full previews for everything over there. But wells, I want to go ahead and let people know at least what we're thinking here about the Pro Core Championship and anything else that you're betting around the world out there. So let's go ahead and and and start off here at least with the Pro Core. This might be the one that people are betting the most. It's no longer the They don't call it the Fall swing anymore, right, what do they call it?

Cup Fall?

Is FedEx Fall?

Yeah?

Yeah, yeah, we're you know, you play for the points and it actually does determine who the one twin are going to be for the full eligibility the top fifty obviously already have their spot secure in all the signature events. Some of these guys can play into more signature events, but yeah, we'll determine eligibility. So I guess these are important events, despite the fact they get buried really in the sport calendar this time of year. But you know, they did change it, I think, to try to give certain players incentive to play. Even though we only have I believe five of the top fifty in the world golf rankings in this field. I think he actually have the same or even more in the Irish Open over on the DP World Tour, which we'll get.

To in a minute.

Sa Heitagala Wyndham Clark are your co favorites at twelve to one, Corey Connor sixteen, Mab McNeely at twenty, Luke Clinton at twenty two.

Min wou Lee Luke Clinton.

By the way, he should have been an Old West like guy, right, I mean they shouldn't like he should have been a gunfighter in the Old West as opposed to a golfer.

But that's neither here to there.

Mayne we lead twenty five to another, maxhillm of twenty five, Jjsbond twenty eight, Keith Mitchell thirty, everybody else forty or longer. West they're heading to Napa and so hopefully they're taking this trip seriously and not just going up there to catch some fresh vino.

Well, they called this the fifth Major for the Wives, so you know that's why you do see some players come here. But yeah, look, the event has been around obviously since twenty It's been around before twenty fourteen, but that's where it started here at Silverado, which was the Johnny Miller renovation. Played here in Napa Valley. They play it on the North Course. There are two courses here at Silverado, so you know, a couple different It was the Fries Open, then it was the Fortnet. Now it is the Pro Core Technologies Championship.

So this course, it looks to be fairly scorable, looks. I mean, it's a resort course. A resort courses pretty scorable overall in general. You know, from what I saw, West just kind of like not a lot of danger, lot of anything. I mean, I guess the only thing we're really worried about here is just the fairways seem to be a little a little tight.

Yeah, yeah, about twenty four yards average with so they are the narrowest technically on the PGA Tour, even though they're really as you mentioned, Matt, not a lot of trouble necessarily here, just simply because there's there's not a lot of water hazards. I think only two holes have water and play fifty three bunkers on the course.

You do have some rolling terrain, some elevation changes.

Rough is about two and a half blue and rye grass mix, so can be a little tricky. The greens eleven and a half on the stint Bent POA can be a little bit bumpier though, because it is West Coast POA that we see in California fifty four hundred square feet average greens. California players have obviously fared very well here with the GALA winning last year as the defending champion, Max Homa, Cameron Champ, Brendan Steel. These are all California guys and any course compared sins you know, probably your shorter seventy one seventy two hundred yard courses TPCC and Antonio, a couple in the Pebble Beach rotation, I think a couple of the TPC courses, but yeah, you're usually looking high teams I think twenty one under was what's the hiff shot last year in his victory, But anywhere probably sixteen to like twenty two under is where the waiting score is gonna be for me.

I just uh, I just went in in the model this week, quest and just is basically like, okay, from what I could tell, rough doesn't seem all that penal, Like, yeah, I understand the fairways are are tight, but maybe you can drive it past some of those tight spots and tight lanear. So I'll bet in drive a distance total driving I even wait a little off the tee with all this. You know, we talk about approach every single week, so yeah, I mean obviously approaches is in there, but I just kind of look for scores, who's gonna take advantage of the par fives, who's gonna who's gonna score birdies or better?

And then who's gonna get it down there a long way?

Because you start to uh, you start kind of look and it doesn't really matter if you hit it in the rough here now for the pro golfers.

For me, i'd be all over the but yeah, I mean there'd be horrible.

But like for these guys, the rough doesn't seem to bother them all that much, and so yeah, I kind of just want a guy that's gonna be closer to the hole. So that was my approach at least this week.

Yeah, I did some distance here. As I mentioned Cameron jam who is one here. You don't have to be a bomber, but you're given free rain to do it because the holes are actually fairly straight. If you watched a little bit of that video that I found that I put in my article up at Visa dot com. Not a lot of dog legs here, not a lot of tricks really here, So you can bomb it off the tee if you so choose.

So I use distance, I use.

Approach, used a little bit around the green, even though you know there are some runoffs here, so you might have to have some chips back onto the green to save some pars. Strokes hee and par four four one hundred to four fifty birdier better the proximity. You can go anywhere from seventy five to one fifty. Now that's a pretty wide rang.

So I did that.

Small and I did do some strokes gain total poa, just because I wanted to take into account that, hey, these are bumpier greens. These aren't this in like the poa that you get in like the Northeast at like River Islands or someplace like that. So you know, guys that are used to playing at Tory or at Pebble Beach or you know, these places out on the West coast, especially in California, I think are going to have at least a little bit of an advantage.

Yeah, I agree with you there.

And then if you're playing first round leader markets, like just the nature of these greens, like the very best the greens are ever going to be is the.

Early way and they're worse in the afternoon. Yeah.

Yeah, Like the early wave of the first day is about the best these greens are ever gonna be. So if you're looking to, uh, if you really gonna play a first round leader, maybe if you're on the fence about a couple of guys, if a guy goes off early, maybe that can be a tiebreaker for you as you do that. So Wes, we put the stuff in the models, We spit some things out here. What ended up on your betting card this week?

Yeah, there were a.

Couple mister obvious plays, but I went ahead and play anyway. Because you have seen some shorter guys win here in recent years, with Sahiff at sixteen to one, Max Homa back to back, you know, Brendan Steele. You've seen some longer shots too, like Stu sinc and Cameron Champ. But I went pretty much like middle range this week. But I started with Matt McNeely and I got him early at twenty five to one, right outside the top.

Fifty right now in the FedEx Cup standing.

So look, you can still be in that top ten in the fall series and get in the first two signatures starting next spring.

So he was runner up here to Max Hoomer in twenty twenty one.

Of course, Matt McNeely is a California kid, so his best golf is usually in this state. Seven top ten finishes always really good putter on POA. So Matt McNeely twenty five to one, another California guy, JJ Spawn. I think he's as high as thirty four to one at CIRCA. He's starting to get below thirty now, but ended the regular season pretty strong T nine at the three MT three at the window, T eleven here last year, also top ten here in twenty twenty. Over the last twenty if you want to shorten any modeling number one in strokes gained approach, I think that's.

Gonna matter this week.

Bo Hossler a little bit north of fifty to one, another Californian that plays his best golf out west. Six at Tory earlier this year, fourteenth at Pebble Beach, pretty good in the fall. Didn't finish lower than thirty if in any of the fall events last season. Was actually t three here in twenty twenty two heading into the final round before he kind of disappointed on Sunday, but he's capable of scoring low here and then a guy with not a lot of background here, but I'm gonna go with the form because he's got three top twelves are better in his last five. I played Chan Kim also at fifty five to one, and then a couple sixty to One's one is a narrative street play that I'm going on a hunch here, and that's Mark Cupboard.

And the reason why I like Mark Coverard is sixty one.

Played his college golf at San Jose State, so that's about an hour and a half away from Silverado. Always an important event to him, but he forgot to register for the event, or he actually registered to lady dropped like his phone and I don't know is in some kind of water and was like a half hour late registering for this event.

So what does he have to do?

Even though he's fully exempt on the PGA Tour, he had to go through Monday qualifying and then win the Onunday qualifiers seven under sixty five to earn a spot. He's been twenty first or better in four of his five appearances here, so I think Hubbard could go well. And then last one was Mac Meisner at sixty to one eighty eighth in the FedEx Cup. But I think he's coming close. He's going to be close to winning one here soon. Three top tens this season, but top twenty or better in four of his last five events. So that was a guy that I think really could go well here. I didn't really take any like super long bombs this week. This is certainly a week you could do it because you have had some hit in recent years.

It's funny.

I literally just decided for this week West, I was good as you could be the slave to the model, and I was literally just going to play the top five guys in my model, two of which ended up on I mean three of which ended up on your card.

Wow.

So literally one, two, three, four five in my model were the three where I just played five outright. So that's all I'm doing this week. It's football season. I got a lot of stuff that I'm that I'm going with. Ye over there, JJ Spawn, Mack Meisner, and Chan Kim. Chan Kim is third overall my model, Jjspahn fourth overall in my model, and mac Meisner's fifth overall in my model. So like I decided, Okay, they're decent odds on these dudes. The model loves them and it doesn't matter if I plug in kind of like twenty four to twenty sixteen twelve, which you know, like who's who was playing well before they kind of got that little bit of a break there whatever, And all these guys were were doing very very well, so very interesting that we ended up there on those same guys. And only are the two guys ended up on my card. Hayden Springer ended up on my card. And listen, like I said, I I was heavily with stuff off the tee. I was heavily stuff on approach. And if you look for him he has gained on approach last six tournaments. He's gained on off the t five of the last six tournaments. Really his his bugaboos the short game and putting. But hey, look putter can run hot sometimes, and if you don't miss the greens, you don't worry about short game. So maybe he can just hit the greens and and we can deal with that. And the other other guy was Johnny Vegas. Johnny Vegas actually number one overall. Yeah, Johnny Vegas is the number one overall in the model this week. Obviously, if i'm if I'm emphasizing on you know, driving and total driving and all that stuff like that, the guy not only hits it long, but he's accurate with it as well, And so third overall in this uh in over thirty six. And then if you go pretty much down from there, every other kind of ladder down, he's first overall in total driving in this in this field.

And they were also, yep, they were also really high on I sorry to interrupt. They were also high on Birdie or Better for Me, which I which I looked at. Springer in Vegas were top ten. Jen Kim was in the top ten. I think number one was like Mitchell and Wyndham Clark was behind him. I don't want to play Wyndham Clark at like.

Twelve to one.

Yeah maybe because could he win? Sure, but sure exactly the same same deal to me. If y'all are wondering who were like the next few off, maybe this helps you if you're filling out DFS line or something like that. Six in my model is Rico Hoey, seventh was Keith Mitchell, eight, with Patrick Fishburn, nine, Luke Clanton, and then it rounds out at the tenth spot with Corey Connors.

And those are all big hitters, especially like hoe and Fishburn, really big hitters off the tee. And then I actually played them a couple times over the summer, got close actually of both of them, but didn't get wins. But those are guys, along with Johnny Vegas, they can really hit it big off the tee. Hayden Springer I think was top ten in distance this season, So all those guys make sense, all.

Right, Wess you're betting another tournament this.

Week though, Yeah, the Irish Open, the Mgen Irish Open.

Actually, you know, it's kind.

Of unfortunate, Matt, these deep World Tour events like it seems like a lot of the cooler events are in the fall where it gets buried by football season. Because they are at Royal County Down this week, which which was ranked I believe by Golf Digest is the number one course in the world in twenty twenty four on the one hundred Greatest Course list, and if you've seen any of the videos, it is raining over there at Northern Ireland this week, so that could be fun. Rory McElroy Shane Lowry are in this field this week, former champions at different courses, so their two shorter shots Aaron Raye, Bobby mack, Robert McIntyre here, rosmus Hoyguard here. So they are at Royal County Down. This is a different course. They haven't played here since twenty fifteen, as they pretty much change a year to year. It is a par seventy one seventy one.

Eighty six.

Original Real Links design, so this is a true I think Links test where you get a lot of deal blind shots on the course. I went ahead and went with one guy that actually played very well here in twenty fifteen. He played so well he's the runner up and lost to a long shot sword in Kelton, and that's Bern Wiesberger twenty eight to one. I've been playing him a lot and he's top six or better on the DP World Tour and scoring t de green gr strokes, hetan approach, scrambling strokes, heeting around the green. This is his first year back after his live contract was not renewed. So he's been playing solid golf and he's come close couple times. Maybe can get it done here. And then a guy not in great form, Ryan Fox thirty to one, but he's one of the best links players in the world. He won the Dunhill Links twice, the runner up at this event. Two top six is at the Scottish Open. He's got four top fives actually in seven different Irish Opens.

So Ryan Fox thirty to one.

Matt Fitzpatrick, the younger brother or Alex Fitzpatrick, I should say, the younger brother of Matt fifty five to one, six and two of his Lass three starts was twelve at the British Masters Sandwich in between runner up last year actually in Northern Island at galgorm Castle, so very familiar with this part of the world. Matthew Jordan eighty to one, who's got seven top twenties, three top tens, one was at Royal at the Open earlier this summer. Really good amateur career if you look at a couple of Links victories. One at St Andrews won the Lithom Trophy. Was actually fourth year on this course in the Irish Amateur in twenty seventeen, so Matthew Jordan eighty to one. And then another guy it's a long shot who was also a co runner up with Weisberger on this course in twenty fifteen, Peperl one hundred and twenty five to one. Proven Links player runner up, another top five at the Scottish Open, fourth and an eighth in the Irish Open. Three top twenties in the Dunhill Link so Eddie Pepperrell won twenty five to one.

The other two golf events.

By the way, this week I did not ride up, but I may have a couple of plays.

The Solheim Cup.

I'm waiting till some of the pairings get announced because they're doing the that said Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. This week USA versus Europe, So waiting for the parings to get announced and then live I believe has their individual finale at least in Chicago, just out of Chicago and Bowling Brook, Illinois. So I don't know how deep I'll go if that live, and you know, maybe I'll play a chockey guy like rock or something.

Yeah, it is it is again. It's we get it, guys. It's football season, but golf is going to roll on. We will have kind of, you know, brief brief versions of this as we moved through the golf season. We know you're you're focusing a lot of attention over there on what's going on in college football in the NFL. But see if we can't make some money along the way, help pad those bankrolls a little bit more. As always head of Vson dot com.
