Morry Frenkel speaks with Michael Gawenda, Walkley Award winner, and former editor and editor-in-chief of The Age, about the Cathy Wilcox cartoon, ‘Grass Roots’, that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age earlier this year. Michael talks about the important role traditionally played by the political cartoonist in the popular press and the process he followed as editor in assessing whether a cartoon should be published. He also talks about the work of the Australian Press Council and his agreement with its important, forceful decision that Wilcox’s cartoon had encoded harmful antisemitic tropes that Jews secretly controlled or manipulated global events, governments and the media.
