Malka Lawrence speaks with Dr Dov Degen OAM, Melbourne kidney specialist, general physician and mental health advocate, awarded an OAM this year for his service to medicine and mental health support. Dov advocates for others, drawing on his lived experience of bipolar disorder and his perspective as both a doctor and a patient. He speaks about the power of listening, of taking people’s experiences seriously and ensuring they feel heard, understood and supported. Through his advocacy, he challenges stigma and offers hope to people who may feel alone. Dov calls on workplaces to support people while they are working, support their recovery when they are unwell and give them the opportunity to return to the work.
