Protesters attempt to block police vehicles from leaving College Green

The Supreme Court has declined to take up a challenge to Maryland's ban on so-called assault weapons. Under the law, it is a crime to possess, sell, transfer or purchase an assault long gun.

The ban's challengers had asked the high court to take up their case before a federal appeals court ruled on whether the restriction is allowed under the Second Amendment. 

The dispute is likely to end up back before the Supreme Court once the appeals court rules. 

By not stepping into the legal battle at this time, Maryland's law remains in place for now.

Supreme Court declines to hear challenge to Maryland assault weapon ban

Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer says he'll try again this week to advance the bipartisan immigration reform measure that was filibustered earlier this year as part of a foreign aid package. 

Republicans blocked the bipartisan border compromise in February at the urging of former President Donald Trump. However, Schumer says calling the vote again will show the public who is working toward solutions. 

Speaker Mike Johnson says if it should pass the Senate, the bill would be dead on arrival in the House.
