Students, parents line up for free stuff as district’s back-to-school bus tour gets underway in East Germantown

  • A newly signed executive order from Gov. Josh Shapiro will direct federal funds to help train workers for skilled-labor jobs that have been hard to fill in Pennsylvania’s tight labor market.
  • Police say a 31-year-old man was killed late Monday morning in Philadelphia after he was shot several times throughout his body in West Kensington. No arrests have been made at this time.
  • Students and their parents are already getting ready for the start of the new school year. Hundreds turned out at Martin Luther King High School in East Germantown, to snag free supplies at the start of the district’s annual back-to-school bus tour. 
  • From lighting porch lamps to gathering whole neighborhoods, thousands of  communities throughout the country, including from this region, will be joining forces Tuesday night to show support for safe communities. National Night Out celebrates its 40th year.
  • New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver is in the hospital receiving medical care. She had been the acting governor while Gov. Phil Murphy is on vacation in Italy. With state officials saying Oliver is unable to carry out her duties, Senate President Nick Scutari is now the acting governor, per the New Jersey Constitution.
