Fresno’s New Tobacco Tax

Common Vaccine Linked to Lower Dementia Risk 

The Fresno City Council voted 6-1 to create a new Tobacco Retailer Licensing Program, requiring businesses that sell tobacco products to obtain a city license and undergo compliance inspections. City leaders say the goal is to crack down on illegal tobacco and vape sales, particularly products that target youth. 

A new study led by researchers at Brown University found that older adults who received the Shingrix shingles vaccine had a 24% lower relative risk of being diagnosed with dementia over the following four years compared with similar adults who were not vaccinated.

A 20-year-old Southern California man is being praised as a hero after confronting and disarming a woman who was allegedly threatening employees inside an In-N-Out Burger in Lake Elsinore. 

Federal authorities allege that Missouri House candidate Thomas Christopher Ross orchestrated a scheme to frame his Republican primary rival by planting cocaine and Adderall in her belongings and then reporting her to police. The plot allegedly unraveled when his own campaign manager went to law enforcement instead of carrying it out. Ross now faces a federal criminal charge as calls grow for him to leave the race. 

The Hollywood Reporter article examines the aftermath of celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's highly public mental health crisis in August 2026, when he livestreamed apparent self-harm on TikTok, was hospitalized, and sparked a broader debate about online culture, public shaming, and the responsibilities of social media platforms.
