TIRES: New California Rules for Replacement Tires

View descriptionShare

A 72-year-old Army veteran and Portland business owner is facing a $10 million civil lawsuit three years after shooting a man who broke into his granite countertop shop. Despite the shooting, prosecutors did not file criminal charges against the veteran.

California regulators have approved the nation's first energy-efficiency standards for replacement tires, meaning some tires currently sold in the state will no longer be allowed once the rules take effect. The California Energy Commission (CEC) adopted the regulations unanimously on August 17, 2026.
