Supervisors Deal Blow To Transportation Tax

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors has not killed the proposed Measure C replacement, but its decision to require a 30-day review creates a serious threat to the initiative's chances of reaching voters this November. The debate pits supporters who want voters to decide on the county's transportation future against critics who say the proposal needs more scrutiny before going to the ballot.  

The GV Wire opinion piece warns that Central Valley nonprofits are facing a severe funding squeeze caused by inflation, reduced government support, and falling donations.

Toyota's surprisingly simple-looking but highly technical method for evaluating recalled V35A twin-turbo V6 engines found in certain Toyota and Lexus trucks and SUVs. The engines are part of a major recall involving more than a quarter-million vehicles due to manufacturing debris that can cause premature engine-bearing wear and, in some cases, catastrophic failure. 

Archaeologists in Lima, Peru have uncovered skeletal remains believed to belong to an adult man who may have been sacrificed as part of a ritual approximately 1,400 years ago near Huaca Pucllana, an ancient adobe pyramid built by the pre-Hispanic Lima culture.

The legendary Fresno Nightcrawler, a cryptid reportedly first caught on security footage in Fresno more than two decades ago, has been immortalized as a Build-A-Bear plush. The stuffed version of the local legend is being sold online for $30 as part of the company's Halloween-themed lineup. 

A local activist group, Fresno Resistance, is campaigning against Fresno's use of Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras and has launched a petition urging the Fresno City Council not to renew the city's contract with the company when it expires in 2026.

Fresno Unified is intensifying its focus on early literacy through targeted interventions, extensive data tracking, and increased accountability. Superintendent Misty Her says the district's early gains, including exceeding its kindergarten literacy goal, demonstrate that focused instruction and continuous monitoring can help more students reach reading proficiency before falling significantly behind.

A 2017 initiative by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service that sends blood donors a text message telling them which hospital received their donation. The goal was to encourage people, especially irregular donors, to donate more frequently.  

Teachers are sounding the alarm that the biggest educational risk from AI may not be cheating, but the possibility that students skip the mental effort required to develop reasoning and analytical skills. Its authors and cited experts contend that writing is more than a way to communicate ideas. It is one of the primary ways people learn to think, and heavy dependence on AI could reduce that benefit.

After significant pushback from parents, students, and some school board members, Omaha Public Schools successfully requested that Omaha police officers stop carrying shock gloves on OPS campuses. Omaha police agreed to the change immediately, while Bellevue police have not adopted the same restriction, leaving an ongoing debate about the use of pain-compliance tools in school settings.
