NEW TARIFFS: Trump Turns Up Trade War With Canada

The WSJ editorial reiterates its longstanding opposition to broad tariffs, arguing that recent court-ordered refunds demonstrate who actually paid the costs: American importers and, ultimately, many consumers. The paper maintains that trade wars generally inflict significant economic damage while delivering fewer benefits than their supporters promise. 

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada collapsed on Aug. 21, 2026, triggering a new escalation in the economic dispute between the two longtime allies. As a result, new 50% U.S. tariffs took effect on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, and Canada announced retaliatory measures.
