HALLOWEEN: Target Apologizes After Clown Costume Backlash

View descriptionShare

A dispute has erupted in Wyoming after state and local officials said Justice Department election monitors exceeded their traditional role during the state's Aug. 18 primary election. Republican Gov. Mark Gordon criticized the monitors' conduct as "aggressive," "irregular," and "very odd," and asked the state's attorney general to investigate what occurred.

Target apologized and removed a children's clown costume after widespread criticism that it resembled offensive blackface and minstrel-show imagery. The retailer admitted the product should never have been sold, said it was especially hurtful to Black customers and employees, and pledged to examine how it passed through the company's review process.
