New Jersey’s Assault Weapons Ban

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals struck down New Jersey’s ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, finding that both violate the Second Amendment. The ruling is the first of its kind at the federal appellate level and could have major implications for similar gun-control laws across the United States as the Supreme Court prepares to weigh in on related cases.

The Washington Post opinion piece argues that higher education is losing public trust because many academic institutions have become overly insulated and ideologically homogeneous. McArdle uses a recent controversy involving anthropology scholars and a university-commissioned report as evidence that academia often responds defensively to criticism, which she believes further undermines confidence in colleges and universities. 

Two North Dakota men learned through DNA testing that they had been raised by the wrong families after allegedly being switched at birth in 1988. They and their parents are now suing Unity Medical Center, claiming the mistake cost them decades of relationships and experiences. While the hospital acknowledges the switch occurred, it says there is no evidence proving the hospital caused it and that records from that era no longer exist.

Proposition 5 would remove the replacement-candidate portion of California recall elections for state officials. Voters would only decide whether to remove an official, while a separate process would determine who fills the vacancy afterward. Supporters say the change prevents political manipulation and ensures fairer outcomes, while opponents say it reduces voters' direct control over choosing replacements.

ABC7 reports that newly hired Sausalito City Manager Elaine Forbes was arrested on suspicion of burglary after authorities say she was found aboard yachts she did not own and appeared to be trying to operate one of them. The arrest came less than three weeks into her tenure and only days after the City Council approved a leave of absence. Her family says she is undergoing a mental health crisis, while authorities continue investigating the incident. 

ApCal Rock’N Ranch's planned free anniversary concert was changed into a fundraiser after the venue was informed that its alcohol license would not allow a free concert in its original form. To comply with the rules, owner Darren Schmall turned the event into a benefit for Central Valley Honor Flight, allowing the concert to proceed while supporting a local veterans charity. 

Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami and are fighting extradition to the United Kingdom, where they face serious allegations related to rape, sex trafficking, assault, and other offenses. The brothers deny all allegations, and U.S. courts will now decide whether they will be sent to Britain to stand trial.
