Soaring gas prices — topping $5.50 a gallon in parts of California — are reigniting calls to suspend the state’s 88‑cent gas tax, the highest in the nation. Supporters say it would give drivers relief, while Gov. Gavin Newsom and consumer advocates argue it would mostly pad oil company profits and drain road‑repair funding.
