Anthropic is sounding the alarm about rapid AI progress. They want a global system to pause development if needed. AI could soon reach a point where it improves itself faster than humans can control it but the idea faces major political and industry resistance and a true global pause would be extremely difficult to enforce.

The California Department of Public Health says the state is “experiencing an unprecedented outbreak” of severe illness, liver failure and deaths from people accidentally picking and eating poisonous wild mushrooms. In particular, the department points to the consumption of Death Cap and Western Destroying Angel mushrooms.

In a recent vote, the board approved naming Edison’s east gym after Smith, an educator and coach who served at Edison for 34 years before retiring in 1997. Also known as “Chief,” Smith is an alumnus of Fresno State and was part of the inaugural Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. chapter, the first African American chapter at the university.
