Since her paralysis in 2014, Tanelle has directed become a change maker in the recreation and access world.

Being limited in outdoor access because of accessibility design and/or lack of access to adaptive recreation equipment sparked the idea for her charity, RAD Recreation Adapted Society.

The RAD Society has been established to help individuals with mobility challenges to lead independent active lifestyles with family and friends by providing an inventory of adapted outdoor recreation equipment for low-cost rental.

Here's what her nomination said:

Tanelle runs the awesome non-profit: The RAD Adaptive recreation society. Their goal is to make the outdoors physically and financially accessible. She does this by providing low-cost loans on adaptive equipment - from mountain trikes and Alinkers to access trax, adaptive kayaks and wave skis - with coaching in their use so people can maximize their experience outdoors.

She is our Zoner of the Week!

With their hockey season unable to continue due to COVID restrictions, the Victoria Admirals U13 C2 hockey team pivoted from playing to focusing on teamwork though fundraising. 

This lead them to the Good Deeds Cup.

The annual Canada-wide contest seeks out minor hockey teams to submit a 60-second video on how they would use the grand prize of $100,000 to make a difference in their community.

The Admirals chose to support the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.

They've now made it into the finals (winning $2,000 towards their charity) and are representing all of BC hoping to win the top prize of $100,000.

They’re a team on a mission to make positive changes that will impact many children on Vancouver Island.

The contest is decided by the public voting online and runs until February 24.

Costco runs, providing a safe place to stay for queer and trans youth, and fundraising for period supplies for a northern Canadian school --- there's so much that Addy & Karina do it's hard to focus on just one!

Addy and their partner Karina have been keeping us all fed and cared for during the entire pandemic. At the beginning they were doing Costco runs for up to 14 people at a time. They have continued to be amazing. - have been fundraising for period supplies for a northern Canadian school. They have already sent a lot already. Its impressive what they have achieved - organized the feeding of our friends after they lost their kitchen to a fire. - feeding any of us on hardtimes. I have been on the receiving end and its amazing. - housing those in need in their own home -pre pandemic, brought us all such joy by feeding us all in their home -brings much needed Chaotic Good to the world There is definitely more. These two are some of my favourite people. They are incredibly kind. Doing so much for all of us while going to school (Addy) and working full time as a nurse (Karina) I wish I could nominate all of my friends, but these 2 have gone above and beyond. And need more thanks than the chaos free mornings I try to occasionally give them (the dog is loveably insane, I walk him when I can).

"Brae is a hairstylist here in Victoria and she recently started a program called the Affirming Services Program. For transgender people that are early on in their transition, if they go to Brae, they will receive 50% off their first gender affirming hair service, on top of that, her program got the attention of several other businesses that are partnering with her, so once things get more organized, there will be more deals and such transgender people can get.

She started this program as she too is transgender and she knows the financial struggle transgender people have as they have several surgeries and such that are a necessity. Like for myself, I need bottom surgery, breast augmentation, and facial feminization surgery (just the facial surgery will cost $70k on its own). This Affirming Services Program is to make things more easier on our pockets as well as also helping us feel like who we really are. "

Zoner of the Week - Brae

Brynn is a 12 year old with a huge heart. 

This winter she was in VGH working her way through recovery from a life threatening infection and ran a fundraiser at the same time.

Brynn decided that people had been so generous and kind in supporting her that she wanted to pay it forward though a fundraiser via the Victoria Hospital Foundation on behalf of the pediatric inpatient unit to try to get more equipment to help out the kids here. 

Not only has she raised over ten thousand dollars to support her fellow Scouts in going to camp, stood up at age 10 to speak at an anti LGBTQ+ protest, and helped teach karate to younger kids for years, she also thought of others while going through this challenging time.

When Nick's son Nathan was born 9 weeks early his family discovered first hand the amazing care and resource a place like Jeneece place in Victoria was. Being from the Comox Valley he quickly realized how difficult it is for North Island families to travel to Victoria in these situations and began advocating for a more centralized home on the island. 

Throughout his 9 hard years of advocacy the ground has broken on Q̓ʷalayu House (pronounced Kwuh-li-you). It is an endearing term used by Elders when they speak of babies and children and their reason for being.

With the encouragement of First Nations, Elders, and other stakeholders and partners, it was decided that Q̓ʷalayu House, mixing both the traditional language and English, reflected an inclusive name that would welcome all families into the home away from home.

Zoë (8) and Noel (13) decided that they wanted everyone to be able to feel the joy the get when they open their stockings on Christmas morning. Over the holidays they were able to make 20 Christmas stockings for youth experiencing homelessness in Victoria.

They wanted to fill the stockings with want items, rather than need items, because there are already lots of fundraiser for the necessities out there. The 20 stockings were stuffed with stockings, socks, toques, ornaments, Christmas pens & pencils & scented markers, toys, games, cards, books, activity books, comics, candy canes, chocolate, candy, mittens, hand sanitizer, tissue, toothbrushes, nail polish, toothbrushes, and lip balms.

They dropped off the stockings plus all the extra supplies and cash to Extreme Outreach who were very grateful.

Completely her idea, we sponsored a family and did a hamper with 1Up for a single family. She offered to pick up presents from anyone, as well as doing anyone's wrapping and doing the final drop off. She suggested hygiene kits for WIN, and because of her over 15 were created and donated. She also offered to pick those up from all of our houses to make it easier. She posted a link to donate to sister of Leila making paper cranes for $1 so we could all donate to that. She never pressures us but she makes it so easy to give, and because of her many families will have a slightly brighter end to 2020. She has an enormous heart and deserves to be recognized"

"We lost my dad to cancer in February. Nadia and her husband Trevor were a huge help to my parents when my dad was sick. And now still helping my during covid isolation. She is also a nurse at Saanich Peninsula Hospital and mother of 3 little kids. Nadia is really deserving so please pick her."
