Michael Salter is a Professor of Criminology at the University of New South Wales. He was lead author of this world first study conducted by UNSW and Jesuit Social Services, which surveyed thousands of men across Australia, the UK and the US. It found that one in six Australian men reported having sexual feelings towards children, and the profile of these men, may surprise you - as Michael explains for us on this episode. The research revealed the prevalence and characteristics of men in the Australian community who sexually abuse children. Professor Salter hopes the findings shine a light onto how to prevent adult men from becoming perpetrators of child sexual abuse.

The shocking number of Australian men sexually attracted to children and teens with Professor Michael Salter

Christine McCarlie is a Glasgow based social worker who has worked with children displaying harmful sexual behaviours for three decades.

She’s seen huge changes in how best to respond in that time, and her expertise is now channeled into co-authoring the AIM Intervention Guidance, which is being taught in Australia and around the world as best practice for how to help children recover.

She also provides support to staff working in specialist services and residential and foster care, with her risk management protocols now widely used throughout Scotland.

Restorative processes around harmful sexual behaviour in children - an international perspective from Christine McCarlie

This is the 23rd episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe.

In this episode we’re going to find out why telling our children not to engage in sexting - simply isn’t working.



It’s a conversation that many adults dread - talking to the young people in their lives about the dangers of sexting.



What is sexting? Young people refer to this more commonly as nudes or dick-pics. It’s creating explicit text messages, or naked or partially naked sexual photos or videos, and then sending them online through an app or from your phone.



While the dangers of sexting are well known, and adults think that we have made that clear to children by telling them “just don’t do it”, research from the Edith Cowan University is showing that approach is not working.



And that in the same way we teach school children about safe sex, we also need to teach them about safe sexting, because it is now such an omnipresent part of their lives.



Researchers Giselle Woodley and Lelia Green conducted extensive interviews with teenagers to find out how and why current messages to simply avoid sexting are failing to hit the mark, despite the legal risks that children know they take by doing it.

Why telling young people to avoid sexting doesn’t work and what to do instead with Giselle Woodley and Lelia Green

It’s a tragic aspect of child sexual abuse, that often the victim survivors are denied a voice to speak about what happened to them.

That in the noise of reporting and researching the prevalence of child sexual abuse, their voice is not heard. 

Community attitudes, legal restrictions, and outdated attitudes of who is responsible, can leave the person who survived the abuse, feeling blame and guilt for what happened to them.

And that leads to silence. And people not realising the extent of the problem throughout all levels of society. 

Australian actor Madeleine West is on a mission to turn that around. She has bravely told her story of child sexual abuse in multiple media outlets, in print, through audio, and on programs such as 60 Minutes. And she’s hoping that by doing this, she can empower others to tell the truth of what happened to them. So that the shame on victims ends, and is rightly placed on the perpetrator.

By doing this Madeleine hopes that awareness is raised, and  hopefully prevents other children from becoming victims.
