This is the 25th episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe.

Today we’re going to hear from a mother whose child has engaged in harmful sexual behaviours, and the fallout on their family.

This mother, who we will call Amy, tells us about the lack of support she continues to feel to this day, and the personal toll from the ongoing consequences of the actions of her son.

Amy never imagined that this could happen to her.

She was a mother to two young boys, and had spent much of her adult life working towards a good life for her husband and two children.

So it was a shock to discover after her marriage broke down, that her son had behaved in a sexually inappropriate way with a young girl.

The consequences of that act still reverberate years later.

Our host Nance Haxton interviewed Amy about her experience, but we have engaged an actor to voice her words exactly from the transcript, to ensure we give Amy and all those involved anonymity.

But her perspective is incredibly valuable, as so many parents in this situation never speak of the experience because of the shame. And because of that silence, we don’t get to learn how to prevent these situations from happening again, or how to better look after all of the victims in these circumstances.

We also speak to Toni Cash, the Principal Advisor for Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation at youth services charity yourtown, about her advice to parents who find themselves in a similar situation.

All the names have been changed to protect their identities.
