Initiative to protect ocean life phases out large nets, using deep-set buoy gear

The National Marine Fisheries Service issued the first fifty commercial fishing permits using deep-set buoy gear this week. Recent state and federal laws began a phase out of large-mesh drift gill-nets that often entangle, injure, and kill whales, sea turtles, dolphins and other marine life.
