Cape Town born Kyle Shepherd is one of the significant South African pianists and composers of his generation. Abdullah Ibrahim became his musical influence and was part of the landscape of his childhood. Through a series of concerts at Untitled Basement and in Cape town with his current Xahuri Trio he payed homage to Abdullah Ibrahim his mentor performing his music. At Untitled Basement with an audience, Jazz and Beyond with Nothemba took the opportunity in conversation with Kyle to explore matters of lineage, memory, Cape Town, mentorship, musical identity, and what it means to inherit a musical language without becoming a copy of the person who created it.
