I’ve been talking a lot the last few weeks about getting used to changes in routines and activities, both my girls are back in school, much to the chagrin of my teenage daughter

Speaking of change, Autumn is just around the corner now. Hopefully soon we’ll finally get that nice, cooler weather, but already the days are getting noticeably shorter. As such, it’s the time of year to start looking into vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D is naturally produced when out skin is exposed to sunlight and does a huge range of important activities within the body from mood regulation, to

supporting bone density, to cardiovascular health.

The trouble with the way we produce it is with South Dakota being as far north as we are, despite the name, we never get the most direct sunlight and in the winter months its even less. Not to mention the shorter daylight hours to get even that indirect sunlight. Finally, once it gets really cold, even people who are outside regularly are often quite bundled up and so none of the little light we have actually reaches the skin.

Personally, and I use this recommendation for most, though people   who are outdoorsy may not need it year round like I do, during spring and summer, 5000IU is Vitamin D is the way to go and bumping that up to 10,000IU during fall and winter, which is true in winter even for the outdoorsy types.

When getting vitamin D, there’re two other things to look for besides just dose, though. Namely, it should be vitamin D3. Most are, because it’s now well-known now that it’s the most bioavailable form. I do sometimes still see D2 out there, however, so just make sure you’re looking. Also, vitamin D should be taken along with vitamin K. So if you take a daily multivitamin, it may not have enough vitamin D to get your numbers quite where they need to be, but if it includes vitamin K, it’ll likely be enough where you can take vitamin D3 along with the multivitamin. If you don’t or if the multivitamin doesn’t include

K, make sure the D3 supplementation does include vitamin K. A lot of the vitamin D supplements now do because of the important relationship between the two.

Other vitamin concerns, now that we’re also getting into cold and flu season are vitamins C and E and iron. Most people are familiar with vitamin C, but don’t necessarily know how it works. Basically, it’s a major antioxidant for the cells and part of why it helps with the immune system. Likewise, E is about as important, but often overlooked, because it does essentially the same job as vitamin C, but is the fat soluble version rather than C being water soluble, and so works on different parts of the body.

And, of course, chiropractic care has also been found to improve immune health in addition to neurological and joint health, so if looking for nutrition information or chiropractic adjustments, we are back to having three doctors at the clinic again able to help you out.

(Sioux Falls, SD – August 27, 2026) – The Helpline Center is recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 and Suicide Prevention Month in September, including 988 Day on September 8, to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and connect South Dakotans to lifesaving support.

International Overdose Awareness Day honors those lost to overdose, supports loved ones left behind, and promotes prevention and recovery resources. The Helpline Center reminds people that they offer free medication lock boxes and DisposeRx packets to help prevent medication misuse and accidental poisoning across South Dakota..

Throughout September, the Helpline Center will also lead outreach, education and awareness efforts focused on Suicide Prevention Month. A key highlight will be 988 Day on September 8, which raises awareness of the 988 Lifeline. This free service is available 24/7 by call, text, or chat for anyone experiencing a mental health concern, substance use issues or emotional distress.

"These observances remind us that help and hope are available," said Janet Kittams, CEO of the Helpline Center. "Whether someone is facing a mental health challenge, substance use concern, or even personal crisis, support is just a call, text, or chat away."
