(((MUSIC---THIS OLE HOUSE---YEE HAH)))
I’m Bill Zortman and Welcome to our Working On Wellness Wednesday Show))))
We start with Dr. Joseph Kippley---
I can give an overview of the citizen boards that help advise the city's health department:
- Regional EMS Authority
- Falls Community Health Board
- Board of Health
-----------you have talked a few weeks ago about numbers—illness---etc—and we are now in the final weeks of October---
------------Dr. Kippley---------------
---------what do you see for the months of November and December?----
Dr. Joseph Kippley—thanks for all you always do –to keep us as healthy and well informed as possible----
Just ahead----three ladies---with quite the understanding with health care issues------all part of our Working on Wellness Wednesday Show
First—Dr. Tim Ridgway—sent his entry for working on wellness Wednesday information –as simple as Ella Bender—Sanford School of Medicine---University of South Dakota..
9:17/30---KELO Commercials
9:19/00---Wellness Wednesday 2
As many of you know---Dr. Tim Ridgway who heads the USD School of Medicine---leads off our Wellness Wednesday Shows most week—but this week he was on the road----
Ella Mae Bender has joined us-----it’s not her first time with the Wellness Show—but it is interesting to follow-along and what Dr. Ridgway wanted us to hear---was how education has evolved since you last speaking experience at the retreat last week---
You spoke at the retreat last week---but with that experience you can tell us along with perhaps a couple of others—
Ella Mae Bender---talk to us about that speaking experience at the retreat forum last week----what you learned from it---and what you would tell others about where you are ---where you want to go----and just when you’ll be in the field from your education experience as a Coyote ---605-261-2001---
Thoughts are normal, italicized is what I will talk about. ● Education experience evolving
○ More comprehensive approach with detailed body systems since the spring —> Everything is starting to click and the full picture is finally coming into view
○ Have built up basic knowledge —> We get to meet patients, learn about their condition, and perform physical exams in real time. ○ I was apart of a leadership academy this summer at Sanford — got to see
how insurance, quality assurance, and telehealth affect the health care
system —> will talk a little bit about this showing a different perspective I don’t learn about in the classroom and how it affects patient outcomes
○ Following the specialties i’m learning about during my course
(electrocardiologist in cardiology, sleep medicine with pulmonology in
respiratory, etc.) —> will briefly say a few things about how clinical and
classroom integration is key for complete understanding and long-term
application. Seeing patients with these conditions while I learn about them. ● Moving to Sioux Falls
○ Excited for future students to have earlier interactions with clinical faculty and the hospital along with mentorship between students of all classes becoming more realistic and accessible. ● Education evolving to an active learning classroom. Some thoughts are below
○ New direction of curriculum is learning about each subject and focuses on application in a clinical setting —> active learning with asking questions and interacting with professors and clinicians in real time. More patient interactions
as well.
■ Ex. What happens when a pulmonary embolism is suspected? What would you do next in the emergency room in this situation? —> how to be proactive in these situations
○ Our class gets to experience new methods of learning with anything between giving lectures to case-based learning sessions with basic science and clinicians —> feedback matters and the faculty are building a program to best fit the students at USD.
○ I am apart of the first class getting to experience the active learning style, and everyone is doing well so far —> Students are involved and helping shape the new curriculum. Our input is creating real results!
- Strategic planning event
○ Will talk a little bit about the event and how everyone gave helpful input for types of active learning in class along with new programs to help students succeed
-----------thanks for following your path---listening to Dr. Ridgway—and wanting to help people with their health care just as soon as possible---
