----Downtown Sioux Falls Events---what you need to know

Here is the list:

Friday

Friday starts with a pretty unique takeover at the Washington Pavilion. SDSU Day brings the Jackrabbits Downtown with hands-on activities, engineering demonstrations and family programming throughout the day. They’ll even be expanding outside onto Main Avenue.

Over lunch, Fridays on the Plaza continues from 11:30 to 1:30. We’re getting very close to the end of outdoor lunch season, so take advantage of these days while we have them.

Friday night, you can catch Masquerade at the Orpheum Theater, or something completely different with the Karaoke Showdown at ICON and DaDa.

Saturday is the big one.

The 39th Annual Festival of Bands Parade kicks off at 8:30 Saturday morning. Marching bands from around the region will fill Downtown with music, families and a whole lot of activity. Come early, grab breakfast or coffee, find a spot along the route and make a morning of it.

And at the same time, Downtown welcomes the 24th annual South Dakota Festival of Books. Authors and readers from across the state and beyond will gather at the Holiday Inn City Centre for South Dakota's premier literary event.

So yes, Downtown will be busy Saturday morning. That's the reason to come, not the reason to stay away. Plan ahead, give yourself a little extra time, and enjoy having two major regional events happening right in the heart of our city.

Saturday night, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra opens its season at the Washington Pavilion with Ravishing Rhapsodies, featuring pianist Gabriela Martinez.

And Masquerade has both afternoon and evening performances at the Orpheum if theater is more your thing.

Sunday

The Daughters of the Nile Craft Fair runs from 11:00 to 4:00 at the El Riad Shrine, and Masquerade wraps up its weekend with a 2:00 performance.

But if you're making one plan this weekend, I'd make it Saturday morning Downtown. Grab breakfast, watch the Festival of Bands, explore the Festival of Books, do some shopping and stick around for lunch.

You can find the complete calendar at dtsf.com/events.

Fun happening in our region.

Steel being made in Iowa?? Playtime coming on 41st in the former Hobby Lobby!!

A data center going……??? Where?? And tomorrow starts…THE FOURTH QUARTER!

Trump announces this week this new steel plant coming to Iowa, its gonna be the biggest, sleekest, coolest plant ever, in typical Trump fashion. Whether you like Trump or not,

that’s what this one will be. A $15 billion plant, in the southeastern tip of Iowa, long way from Sioux Falls. It’s an area that doesn’t have unemployment under 2% - its an area that’s in need of an economic boost. Minnesota will also be benefiting from this steel plant.

The raw product will be coming from the Iron Range in Minnesota in a $3 Billion mining plant, which the raw product will conveniently barge down the Mississippi River as both areas are in proximity to the Mississippi.

So that’s a long ways away, why are we talking about that for a program that highlights the Sioux Falls market. Well, maybe we’ll get better steel prices..so that’s a benefit.

But, Bill, this is really a story about economic development. We didn’t get the call, because we couldn’t employ this facility. Rumor has it however, that Minnesota may have got the call, and between excessive taxation and crippling regulations, the steel plant said, “We’ll look at Iowa instead”. Wow..so that’s how this story ties into real estate.

Our Sioux Falls Development Foundation & Forward Sioux Falls are delivering these same type of results. I’m not saying its $15 Billion, but between everything happening in Foundation park, it may start scratching that level.

That’s not even counting whats going on with Sanford/Avera our medical network, 1st Preimer Bank & Card. This remote area in Iowa needs this, we are experiencing this every year we

The new name in fun coming to town has 3 letters…N-R-G ! What’s that sound like??

Energy. It’s a large indoor entertainment complex going into the former Hobby Lobby at

The Urban Air deal fell apart. It’s great space, adjacent to Costco. So congratulations to Van Buskirks on that deal.

I teased about a data center..totally to grab attention. Don’t really know what’s going on with our local data center. Some say it’s dead, they say they are on pause mode.

That’s ok to pause..I think that’s what’s needed until we understand it better…but our AI appetite is huge, so we’ll be needing more data. Just need to find an area that wants them, like the steel plant in Iowa.

Retailers are excited, Tomorrow starts the 4th quarter. Christmas stuff already at Menards.

Caroline Hansen—has been working with us on Jackets---FFA----

Thought I would start this conversation in a different thread. National FFA Convention is just a few weeks away so wanted to get a jump on planning some interviews. Convention is the week of October 19-24. It's easier for me to get these figured out before the teachers leave and are on the road.

-----------what else should we know----FFA—one more way our young people mature and grow---

That’s ok to pause..I think that’s what’s needed until we understand it better…but our AI appetite is huge, so we’ll be needing more data. Just need to find an area that wants them, like the steel plant in Iowa.

It’s hard to believe we’re nearly into October now, especially as the leaves haven’t been changing much yet, thanks to all this rain, but that will happen soon once the sun finally comes out again starting tomorrow from the sound of things and likewise many annual plants are dying out and ready to be cleared away.

So today I’d like to give some advice on how to protect oneself while doing some of these seasonal tasks like cleaning out the garden as well as general fall cleanup.

Like most physical tasks, especially ones you’ll be going at for a half hour or longer, it’s good to stretch and limber up before starting. When just limbering up, it doesn’t have to be anything fancy or detailed.

Just as simple as toe touches, some marching steps, stretching each arm across your chest and then stretching them by reaching back, and (slowly and gently) turning the torso left and right. Just by limbering up, you’ll have less muscle fatigue and strain as well as lower risk of injuries like simple sprains.

Just like in spring when starting gardens, using good and appropriate tools can help out quite a bit. If digging into the soil, the types of tools won’t change quite so much as long as you at least have a good spade and something to break up the soil, especially if it’s still thick and muddy. Also, while not so much a way to directly protect your spine, a sturdy pair of work gloves is arguably more important in autumn than in spring since you’re dealing with generally drier, harsher plants or other materials like wood. And of course as a chiropractor I personally like to be careful with protecting my hands. Not to mention,

when you’re worried about an obvious risk, you’re less concerned about a less obvious risk, and pulling and lifting without hand protection may make someone a bit less aware of how they’re pulling and lifting.

Although most of that applies specifically to people clearing out gardens or other patches of their yards specifically, one thing that a lot of people will be doing if they have a yard at all is raking. Of the three best pieces of advice when it comes to raking, the first is to use a sort of rocking motion back and forth to pull the leaves toward you and go forward again for the next stroke.

The second is applicable to most repetitive tasks in most aspects of life and that’s to switch sides when and if you’re able. If you start raking by leaning into your right side, do that for the first 10 minutes and then switch sides for, ideally, the next 10 minutes. Using the opposite side may feel a little awkward, so you may feel like switching back sooner, but alternating at all will help keep one side from getting overworked. --------Finally, the third really is useful for the vast majority of prolonged, repetitive activities and that’s simply to take breaks when needed. -----Usually around every half hour or so, take a quick 5 to 10 minute break before getting back to the same or similar activity.

And as always, if you do injure yourself while clearing out the yard or garden for the season, have any other sort of injury, or just needing a tune-up before we get to winter, we are back to three doctors in the clinic eager to serve you. 2821 S Center Ave, jordechiropractic.com, 605-335-0880.

Broad Coalition Urges South Dakotans to Vote No on Amendment I and Protect Medicaid Expansion

Press Event Highlights That More than 30,000 South Dakotans’ Health Coverage Would Be Put at Risk Should Latest Attempt to Undermine Will of Voters Pass

Sioux Falls, SD – A broad coalition of state health professionals, public health and patient advocacy groups, business and community leaders are urging South Dakotans to vote against constitutional Amendment I this November to preserve access to affordable, quality healthcare for tens of thousands of our friends, family and neighbors.

The Vote No on Amendment I coalition held a press event today to highlight many problems with the proposed amendment, specifically that more than 30,000 South Dakotans who currently rely on Medicaid could lose their health insurance coverage should voters approve Amendment I. The latest attempt to undermine voter-mandated expansion of Medicaid would repeal the program if the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) drops even one percentage point below 90%, the current rate.

"The amendment creates an all-or-nothing approach: even a small reduction in the federal match could cause South Dakota to end Medicaid expansion entirely, putting coverage for more than 30,000 people at risk,” said Deb Fischer-Clemens, Vote No on Amendment I chair. “South Dakotans were clear with their vote in 2022. Healthcare is something that we all need and people working hard for low wages should not have to choose between seeing a doctor and the essentials required to survive day-to-day.”

Taking Medicaid expansion away would force many South Dakota families to choose between paying for healthcare and paying for groceries or rent. Impossible decisions like those would make life more difficult for hard-working people already living paycheck-to-paycheck.

South Dakotans enacted Medicaid expansion by an overwhelming vote in 2022 and know the quality, affordable health insurance coverage it provides helps people access the care they need, stay healthier and participate in the state’s thriving workforce. They know it protects individuals and families from devastating medical debt and helps keep rural hospital doors open. Medicaid expansion is linked to better health outcomes, including earlier cancer diagnoses, higher cancer survival rates, and prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke. Amendment I risks all these benefits.

The Vote No on Amendment I coalition consists of individuals and patient advocacy organizations that include: the Community HealthCare Association of the Dakotas, AARP South Dakota, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Blood Cancer United, South Dakota Emergency Medical Association (SDEMSA), South Dakota Voices for Peace and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
