Blog—November 6, 2024-10-11—It’s YOUR Agri Business
There was lots to talk about in this Agri Business Show—which also included a lot of official information about the November 5, 2024—South Dakota Election.
We started with Casey Crabtree---my best contact in Pierre—and we talked about the amendments that were before the public---and why only 1 of 7 or was it 8 that actually passed.
  But what about the rest-----
One passed---Work requirements on any person eligible to receive benefits under the expanded Medicaid program—except for those persons who are physically mental disabled.
Amendment E—would have changed the text of the State Constitution to the use of generic male pronouns when referring certain officeholders or individuals
Amendment G—Establishing a constitutional right to an abortion and provided the framework for the regulation of abortion. The framework would have over-rid existing laws regulations concerning abortion
Amendment H---the amendment would have required one primary election with all candidates running against each other in their respective races, including the minority party and unaffiliated candidates—two candidates receiving the most votes would go to the general election
Referred Law 21—Pipeline –the Act authorized counties to impose for any tax year in which the pipeline operates to receive a tax credit of $1 per foot surcharge on carbon dioxide pipelines. Returns from the surcharge would have to be distributed as tax relief to each property owner in the county where the pipeline was installed. The no win leaves the law as is---Chairman of the SD Property Rights and Local Control Alliance said the special law advantaged private for profit carbon dioxide pipeline companies and their foreign investors at the expense of South Dakotans
Measure 28 would have eliminated sales tax on food measure----Human consumption is still not defined by state law—however its common definition includes food and drinks---
Initiated Measure 29—Recreational Marijuana would have allowed individuals 21 or older to possess, grow, ingest and distribute marijuana or paraphernalia---
------------We talked with Minnehaha County Commissioner Dean Karsky—about the results in his county. What we found was that the ballot counting was continuing---Dean and I were actually meeting in the County—in Hartford for a short-time last night----4 priests were in essence holding court----there was no TV in the building----but we were with 100 plus people who weren’t watching TV----but talking about life.
Today Dean and I talked about what had happened as far as the counting of the votes which had been delayed and was still going on while we were doing our interview. It did create concerns in all of South Dakota—when the biggest county’s returns are not coming in. He suggested it looked like a case “of lack of preparedness” ---I’m sure the story will continue.
We talked with Brent Baloun---Plains Commerce Bank—about planning what needs done----for clients—young-older—ag—or business. The planning is what it is all about---and hopefully we have been able to help this week.
Sarah Heinrich had the Growing Harvest Network from KFGO Fargo—Barry was in for Matt Swenson—with Swenson Commodities mid-morning numbers for met-grain-energy and yes the big board on Wall Street.
Matt Merritt—Paulsen Agency and Roy Nielsen Owner of Dispensaries in Sioux Falls-Yankton/Vermillion---and soon to be North Sioux City---shared that as businessman who had been in Pharmaceuticals and Pet Health---he thought the cannabis regulations were important for so many people. It is designed to share things that need help like anxiety, depression, glaucoma, AIDS, neuropathy and migraines.
24 states have already approved it and both Harris and Trump support lowering the severity at the federal level for marijuana offenses—they believe the trend is clear.
Roy shared that he may not continue in South Dakota—is looking at Minnesota—and for him the vote—and the treatment by state officials has him concerned.
We closed the hour with Congressman Dusty Johnson----landslide winner—and excited that not only the White House—but the House and Senate are all on the same page and it could be good for the future.
Our show is available live at 1320, 105.1, 107.9—use the KELO-App or streaming on line. Norm Anderson posts the podcast—and I write this blog to give you insights on what is in the show.
