Blog---May 7, 2025—9-10---Working on Wellness Wednesday

Our Working on Wellness Wednesday –took a few different turns on this Wednesday—but all involved safety and wellness. Good story lines and hopefully we can make a difference.

Like starting with Terry Ebright-representing Southeast Electric and Sioux Valley Energy. Terry has been on the show a number of times and the only confusion we have with them---do I put it in the Business Show (which includes Wellness) or the Agri Business Show. With the fact that two lives were lost with a tractor that ran over the victims not far from here----it was important enough for it to run in the Wellness Show and the Farm Show.

The tips were pretty simple but life changing---

Memorial Day Week---Drive Safely around construction and work zones.Keep hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and be aware of work zonesBe aware of clearances above and belowWatch out for green boxes and electrical equipment near and along fieldsTerry had advise for what to do if there is contact with power linesCall 811 Before you digHe shared what to do once facilities/lines are locatedHe shared how powerful power lines are that deliver electricity ---trust me you don’t want to fool with themHand dig around mark lines

If we can save a life---or keep someone from being injured—Terry and I can do that drill---- anytime—and perhaps as accidents happen in the coming year---we should do updates on what happened in such a way that we can help others avoid accidents.

This weekend-- is Avera Race Against Cancer---it is on the Saturday the 10th—Elijay Bonde---explains it is the 37th Annual event—and it is taking place in the Avera system---in Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Mitchell, Pierre and Yankton as well as Marshall, Minnesota.

The Avera Race supports local patients and families fighting all types of cancer. The Avera Mace –depending on location—it may include walks, including official chip-timed 5K or 10K runs as well as a 1.5 mile family walk or 3-mile walk. The events also include inspirational survivor recognitions, survivor photos, snacks and beverages.

Events also include inspirational survivor recognitions, survivor photos, snacks and beverages.

It celebrates cancer survivorship as well as those lives that have been lost due to disease.

Race organizers expect more than 6,000 participants along with 400 volunteers to make it happen. Last year’s race raised a record $731,00—through the years the event has raised more than $12 million to support cancer patients.

Glad we could share the information----

Dr. Joshua Jorde joined us---he shared that his garden doesn’t seem to be doing amazing things, but because he listened to his own advice—he didn’t hurt himself doing it either.

Of course May marks the last month of the school year—and for all kids that often means a bit more running around like maniacs that even the rest of the year.

Dr. Jorde talked about pain and when to check it—depending on age and circumstances.

Guest #4---Lauri Hoffman---shared the info on the 5th Annual Flying for Life blood drive event, which is a friendly competition between Sanford AirMed and Avera Careflight.

The event is important for the Sioux Falls and surrounding area—and as we head into summer with travel and vacations—and much of the blood collected from this event will be a jump start. During the summer we often see lighter collections due to people enjoying the weather with camping and vacations, but the need for blood is sometimes even greater.
