One of the regulars in our Wellness Wednesday Show is Joshua Jorde—once a month---

Dr. Jorde—talks us thru what you are discussing today---

As usual, I asked my daughter what I should talk about on the radio today since, if nothing else, I sometimes get the start of an idea, but she actually came up with a great one right away. She said I should talk about stress and low back pain.

Though at first I wondered what she had to be stressed out about other than having me as her dad, or worrying that I’ll talk about her on the radio, though also she had her first AP exam yesterday morning, so there was that.

So, what does stress have to do with chiropractic? Quite a bit both broadly as well as even more specifically. In the broad sense, it’s a common health care issue that affects multiple aspects of health and that chiropractors can often give both specific and generic advice to help manage it. In the more direct sense, stress is often carried in the trapezius muscles at the top of the back and can lead to upper back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

Also, stress weakens connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments, so in the long term will often result in lower back pain as well.

As with most things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. However, while a lot of times people can identify stressors in life, many of them simply can’t be cut out completely. Pretty much everyone is going to have job stress, but still need a job. Pretty much everyone has family stress, but (except in extreme circumstances), one shouldn’t cut out family. Still, if you find something that is giving you more stress than enjoyment and it’s something that can be taken out, then better to do so.

A real world example of something like that is I have a friend who was on the board for a particular organization as well as being a regular member, but the stress from being on the board was getting to be too much with all of her duties at home as well, so she announced her departure while still giving time to find a replacement and still enjoys her role as a regular member.

One of the best ways to lower stress is simply exercise. Thankfully, it doesn’t even have to be particularly intense. Simply walking for 30 consecutive minutes at the end of the day will significantly decrease cortisol levels.

Cortisol happens to be the main ‘stress hormone’ of the body. Massage and meditation can also help, as does getting a chiropractic adjustment, by the way. Also, although more for anxiety rather than general stress, it’s still helpful in the middle of or shortly before or after a stressful situation to do some anxiety breathing which consists of breathing in slowly through the nose for 3 seconds, holding it for 3 seconds, and breathing slowly out through pursed lips for 3 seconds.

One major affect stress can also have on us is at night when trying to sleep, which then creates a vicious cycle as the bad sleep creates more stress which then causes more issues which in turn worsen sleep.

One bit of advice to help with sleep when feeling tense in general is to flex individual muscle groups for a few seconds and then relaxing and going through all the major muscle groups. For example, curling

your toes for a few seconds, then flexing your calves, then thighs, then tightening abs, the trapezius, then arms, forearms, and finally fingers. It’s often harder make a muscle relax by thinking about it, but it’s much easier to think and tightening a muscle and then having it relax after, which usually will relax more so than the original starting point.

So if you’ve been dealing with a lot of stress lately and needing help with upper back and neck issues, or facing chronic stress and now needing help with your low back, or even just getting hurt while getting

back into the swing of things now that we’re approaching summer, we have three doctors at Jorde Chiropractic Clinic eager to help. You can find us at jordechiropractic.com or call at 6053350880. We’re located at 2821 S Center avenue and our office hours are MWF 9-530, TTh 9-1230, and Sat 9-noon.
