Blog—May 6, 2024-10-11—It’s YOUR Agri Business
Our It’s YOUR Agri Business Show----for the first Monday in May gave us a chance to go on schedule---with Mr. Auction----Chuck Sutton and Mr. Lincoln County---Jim Schmidt. And that was just the start.

Chuck Sutton shared some of the sales they have seen with numbers from Lake, Kingsbury Counties---and a few others. For us it was a look at just a few of the Sutton Auctions and prices that they were brining.

It’s something we have done for a couple of years now----and while giving the audience price per acre---we can talk about when is the best time to sell---and if it is an estate—what else should be kept in mind. One of those that he shared was 2380 acres in Kingsbury County at $1900 an acre---others he mentioned included prices at from $4900 to $5200---a $6750---an $8700 $10,600 and $1600 in Lyons County.

As you might guess—we asked what the next few months holds-what’s the marketplace like---and how to plan ahead. Good information and you can hear the full pricing and locations if you go to the KELO-AM Website-and look for the May 6, 2024-10-11 Ag Show.

Jim Schmidt---Lincoln County---shared the New Justice Center in Lincoln County, the comprehensive plan rewrite—the Satellite Center Exploration ---plus we talked crops—the mood the election and just good ole—Loyal Lincoln County.

Chris Bliley-Growth Energy joined us to talk about the nation’s leading biofuel trade association and their reaction to new tax and carbon modeling guidelines released by the current administration. The guidelines which will be used to calculate the section 40B Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blender tax credits under the inflation reduction act, are an important step forward for the bioeconomy, according to Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor.

The guidance crosses an important threshold in carbon modeling, recognizing for the first time that farming techniques can reduce the carbon intensity of crops and by extension, bioethanol product. It’s also the first time Treasure has used the Argonne National Labo’s Greet Model in federal tax policy. These –according to Skor are promising big-picture developments and signal that ag is a key part of our nation’s climate strategy.

She added the new 40B GREET model is trending with scientific consensus when it comes to measuring indirect land use change. Years’ worth of peer-reviewed research has shown that this number has been decreasing when it comes to bioethanol production.

Still the administration’s restrictive all-or-nothing approach to recognizing the value of climate smart ag practices may ultimately limit innovation and make farmers, blenders and producers less –not more likely to invest in emissions-reducing technologies.

Nolan Clarke---Plains Commerce Bank joined us to share the Planning for Plains Patrons. We talk farming, business and families-young-mid-life and senior---which is something they do with their 9 banks—that understand the importance of rural and urban areas. We follow along with Plains each Monday and Wednesday in this ag business slot.

Sarah Heinrich—KFGO Fargo—gave us the Growing Harvest Update. Something she does not only in this ag show---but other of our Midwest Communication Stations here in Sioux Falls.

Matt Swenson---shared the morning commodities----the grain-the energy—the meat and the Big Board on Wall Street. Swenson Commodities-stands ready to not only answer our questions but those of our listeners and others.

Jerry Schmitz---SD Soybeans and Danita Murray SD Corn---gave us a look at what they are seeing not only in the fields—but those pushing for agriculture. The two call it like it is and keep us posted on what they are doing to help their industries----including trade—legislation a new others. They are valuable to not only us and our audience—but all those across our trade territory. Thank you both.

Jaime Wood SBA of South Dakota---cris-crossed –SD last week from Sioux Falls to Rapid City and back. And this morning she shared the Small Business Person of the Year in South Dakota---Nick Heineman---who represented SD in DC for the National awards—and then back here to host the presentations to Business Persons of the Year by category in Sioux Falls. Yes I did get to present Jodi Schwan her Business Champion of the Year Award-----she deserves—and it was to meet with the winners and all there to thank them on Thursday.

Look’s Marketplace has been here since 1883---and it was our pleasure to have them in our studios today.

Rock Nelson—shared the Rock Report—today with Andrew Young—Chief Operations Officers –Akicita Federal ----(Lowe Brule)---Andrew Young.

We heard how their services benefit the Lower Brule Tribe---and what sets their organization and sets their services apart from competitors.

Among the products they feature—Bison, corn are two Ag products that can be exported. It was an interesting story---an keeps Rock busy—helping those involved and those that get popcorn and  meat products. It’s a story we know is important with all the political pitter-patter we hear from Pierre about South Dakota tribes.

Iowa State Climatologist Justin Glisan joined us before heading to a meeting of other State Climatologists from our area. Yes not only Iowa---but Laura Edwards in South Dakota and neighbors in Nebraska—Minnesota---and others. Justin talked about the dry-out continuing this week----as we now move into the 2nd week of May.

Look ahead is for warmer weather—and of course I would have to mention that May is generally a severe weather month----and we’ll need all the help we can get to stay on top of mother nature and what she deals us.
