Blog---May 3, 2024---9-10---It’s YOUR Business—Show 44-64
First Friday of May and it was a good—It’s YOUR Business show and we
covered a lot of good—developing events—and even the Annual Awards
Ceremony for SBA on SD businesses and hard working folks making a difference
in this state.
Jodi Schwan---Sioux Falls Business started the show----she was given the
2024—Small Business Advocacy Champion award for her work sharing stories---
one by one with the work of a self-starting communicator that makes such a
difference. Jodi was joined to start the show with Jamie Wood---SBA of South
Dakota. We shared what she does—how she does it----and yes Jodi-ville is
appreciated with every story she writes and tells. Two years ago---I was
selected—and thanks to Jaime and Bryson for asking me to present the award to
her on Thursday. Even shed a happy tear or two---for the pride all of us take with
her humanism---her professionalism----and the work to make sure the story is one
that inspires. WOW!!!
Jodi shared a few notes—
 Billion Pavilion Opens for Play at Sanford Children’s Hospital
 Commercial Building Permits boldly below the numbers for first 4 months
of 2024 –compared to 2023---but predictions are still for another billion $
year
 And yes Boutiques coming and going….
Jamie was back to share more details on the SBA Week---yes Nationwide—but
we will focus in on the Border to border coverage for the week in South Dakota in
the 10:00 Show.
Jessie Schmidt---BBB of South Dakota---the discussion was around natural
disasters –storms, tornadoes, flooding and fires---that can bring out the best in
people but strangers often reach out to help others in need. Unfortunately the
aftermath of a crisis also brings out contractors taking advantage of those who
have already been victimized.
It can happen with local contractors may be busier than usual with new
customers after a natural disaster, meaning victims of storm damage may be
eager to hire a contractor---any contractor they can find---to fix their home repairs
ASAP –ignoring red flags—BBB stressed the need to stay vigilant and hire a
TRUSTED business that will get the job DONE RIGHT.
Sadly there are “Storm chasers” and out of town contractors soliciting
business—although not all storm chasers are scammers, some may lack the
proper LICENSING for your area—yes offer quick fixes or make BIG promises that
they don’t keep.
Here are four things BBB and our Jessie suggest you do:
 Contact your insurance company

 Do your research
 Be careful of door-to-door contractors
 Be cautious of requests to pay for everything UPFRONT
Should make sense to you and you can always contact the local BBB.
Teri Schmidt---Experience Sioux Falls has us really looking at the calendar
for the June 14-18 Soccer event at Yankton Park. 187 teams coming---11
players on the field—20 players to a team---and if we do good---we are
welcoming—we stand to get them back for 2026.
Teri is making sure she visits at the least every Friday as we are now just
6 weeks away from the start. Teri will remind us to treat them in a
welcoming manner----and we will wear you out telling you that---but we
want you to tell someone else as well.
Kip Rounds—SD Game Fish Parks----gave us a reminder that our State
Parks come equipped with plenty of camping if you are coming into fish---
or enjoy the great out-doors ---to us we want to make it accommodating for
those that visit----we want them to go back---and develop a family tradition
to come together—play together—and developed some times that will have
long term memories. Last week we shared a new fishing club called Big
Sioux Fly Fishing—always glad to have Kip and his team tell the stories---
and give us some ideas that can make a difference-today-tomorrow and
beyond.
Ron Nelson---Nelson Commercial Real Estate—helped us make the move
from April to May—with what he called topics around town and the
industry. He joined us for a panel discussion two days earlier---with Tony
Bachman—our Leader for our Real Estate Shows----and Teddi Mueller---
Home Builders Association---that did a round table with Butch Warrington--
-with the building permits figures for the first four months of the year---
even though there were some numbers lower----the Butch bet is that we will
have another billion dollar year. Ron talked about the kind of inquiries he’s
getting and what he is being asked. He joins us twice a month---to talk
Commercial Real Estate----and Ole Nellie is good at what does.
We took just a few minutes with Kendra Rare by Design Team---planning
a unique fashion show in Sioux Falls Saturday. The team is partnering with
befree, an adaptive fashion company for the 3 rd annual fashion show—The
Style Show: A Runway to Empower at in Sioux Falls on the 4 th . The event
strives to foster community engagement for individuals with rare diseases
and disabilities.
Brian Jamros---President of the Sioux Falls Canaries—took the 9:45 slot-
--talking about a two stop road trip for the birds before they open the
season here next week----

Coming in the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks—presented by Kwik Star—“9
innings of Wining” with a chance to snag $10,000 in cash and prizes.
Opening Day is a –Fireworks Friday---a perfect finale to Opening day. We
talked about a reminder on online tickets or at the Birdcage Box
Office—there is a 10% discount when they are purchased 24 hours in
advance.
All week –well-twice ---we have been talking about the Mock-Mass
Casualty Training exercise being accomplished today.
Dee-Ann Konrad shared with us what they were doing the immediate
reactions to the events.
They had just completed the mock tornado---with a mock plane crash
and a semi-vs building crash to follow.
40 CTE Students were participating—while 60 others were playing the
role of “victims”
The training scenarios included police cars—fire trucks and
ambulances---and we provided a role too—that of the media wanting to
know what was going on----which you would find at anything that was
moving along this way.
Glad they are doing it---and we had a second hour update---and offered
an invitation for some of those involved to join on shows next week.
Diana Patterson-Sanford Careers trolled for us with Food Service needs
