Blog---May 28, 2025—9-10—Working on Wellness Wednesday

Our Working on Wellness Wednesday show with us running towards the last weekend of May---had us looking at a lot of summer-time concerns and things we could do.

Twila Perkinson---a Child Life Specialist with Avera wanted us to look at the health routine for the summer of 2025---among the discussions-------

How can you help your kids adjust to a summer routine---in essence maintain routine for meals, activities and sleep? What do parents need to know about kids and screen time? How much should they get protection from each day? What are outdoor activities for parents to consider? She talked about promoting safety—helmets, proper footwear, and rules of the roadAnd we answered can kids stay safe in the sun? (but include sunscreen, hydration, and yes protective clothing)

Right behind---Joe Kippley—Sioux Falls Health Director ---and its been awhile since we included –a measles outbreak---South Dakota and even nationwide.

In essence Joe’s main message was to get residents all ages their MMR vaccinations. Mr. Kippley did come armed with stats—on the national outbreak---and the work to improve the vaccination rates within the South Dakota borders.

The goal we have---parents have is to keep the kids and certainly the parents as well—healthy before the school bells ring in late August.

As it turned out---we talked about my years with measles---the work that has been done to curtail measles---and what we can do to work together—parents, kids, and medical personal this summer and beyond.

Our good friend Chiropractor Dr. Joshua Jordie---made a house call on our Working on Wellness Wednesday.

His wife and a daughter is in the process of traveling to Ireland while his 7 and 13 year old youngsters were staying at home with Dr. Jordie.

Dr. Jordie talked about what parents ask---protecting themselves with their families while traveling.

Whether in planes, trains, and especially buses it’s a little trickier than when in a car. At the very least you are not able to stop and get out to easily stretch. However if you have an aisle seat---you won’t have to be squeed by anybody and you can get up and walk up and down the aisle or even march in place for a couple of minutes to keep limber and prevent your lower back from getting too tight.

When it comes to protecting your neck, cars aren’t much better than other forms of travel with how the seats are and if anything it’s worse when driving compared to being a passenger because you don’t have as much freedom due to having keep your eyes on the road.

When dealing with layovers—Dr. Jordie personally recommends finding your gate first before going to find a place to eat or shop, but even if deciding to sit and wait at the gate then, just like in the air, you should try and get up and stretch and move around every hour.

A question you might have to answer on your own---is it better to get adjusted before the trip or after—or both?  Dr. Jordie suggests both.

Jordie Chiropractic  is at 2821 Center Avenue—just north of the Hyvee on Minnesota Ave. You can book an appointment on jordiechiropractic.com.

Lauri Hoffman with the Community Blood Bank---shared a success last week with 97 donors giving blood with 83 units of blood collected. That amount of blood helps up to 249 local patients.

Lauri shared the reason she stresses the importance of the need for blood for the summer is because the people who are on vacation, traveling somewhere, etc. means they might not always be donating on a regular basis. Losing those PINTS can make the need greater. Her hope is that we don’t get out of our routine during the summer, with school not being in session and taking more leisure time for ourselves.

Giving blood is essential—not only during winter, spring, and fall but thru the summer. How would you do a Working on Wellness Wednesday—about giving if you didn’t include the summer scenario? Just give---and prep before you give so you can do your part.

Our It’s YOUR Business Show---has made the Working on Wellness Wednesday---an important part of our weekly routines. Those medical providers from several directions have vowed to be a part of what we share and hopefully helping those that listen.

Listen live to the show at 1320, 105.1, 107.9---use the KELO App, streaming on line or just ask Alexa. Norm Anderson posts the show Podcast---my job is to schedule the guests, prepare the interviews, and yes write this blog that can help long after the show has aired.
