Teri Schmidt talked about it being Rock The Country this weekend but you want to talk Brandon—about the long July 4th weekend---

It all begins Friday, July 3, with Downtown Open Streets.

For one evening, Phillips Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets becomes a people-first space instead of a roadway. You'll find live music, outdoor games, local businesses out on the sidewalks, food, activities, and plenty of room to walk, gather, and explore.

This month's Open Streets also features our Summer Art & Wine Walk. You can purchase a wine punch card and stroll through participating downtown businesses while sampling wines, meeting local artists, and experiencing galleries and pop-up exhibits throughout the district. It's one of the signature summer evenings in Downtown and a great excuse to make a full night of it.

Then on Saturday, July 4, the Sioux Falls Independence Day Parade returns to Downtown after a two-year absence as part of America's 250th anniversary celebration. It's something many people have been asking to see return, and we're excited to welcome thousands of people back to Phillips Avenue for one of our country's favorite traditions.

You can easily spend the entire holiday weekend Downtown, wrapping up Saturday evening with a free Levitt concert featuring Andrea Ross & Her Big Band.

Now, back to this weekend.

Friday afternoon, our AMPT Downtown series continues, bringing free live music and performances to The Steel District over the lunch hour. Thanks again to Xcel Energy for making this summer-long program possible.

If you're looking for dinner plans, Plum's Cooking Company is hosting its Summer Flavors class Friday evening, showcasing fresh seasonal ingredients and bold summer cooking.

Then Friday night, Levitt at the Falls welcomes The Vindys, a powerhouse band known for soulful vocals, rock energy, and an incredible live show. As always, it's completely free.

Saturday starts with the Falls Art Market, where dozens of local artists line Metli Place with original artwork, handmade goods, and creative demonstrations.

Levitt follows that up Saturday morning with Joy Lab featuring Joe Davis & The Poetic Diaspora, an interactive family experience centered around music, storytelling, and creativity.

Saturday afternoon, the Sioux Falls Food Co-op is hosting a free Ice Cream Social featuring Berrybrook Dairy Nook, and later that evening, the Levitt hosts the That Sounds Decent Festival, showcasing some of the best local and regional musicians in one of the biggest free music events of the summer.

There's plenty more happening throughout Downtown all weekend long, but if you really want to start planning ahead, mark your calendar now for July 3 and 4. Between Open Streets, the Art & Wine Walk, the return of the Independence Day Parade, and a full lineup of entertainment, it's shaping up to be one of the biggest weekends Downtown has seen in years.

You can find the full schedule and all the details at dtsf.com/events. We hope to see you downtown.

(((IF BRANDON WANTS TO MENTION)))

((Sioux Falls, S.D. — Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. (DTSF), in partnership with the City of Sioux Falls, will launch a month-long traffic calming pilot along 10th Street, beginning at 2nd Avenue and the 10th Street viaduct. Running from June 29 through July 31, the pilot will explore how thoughtful street design can create a safer, more welcoming, and more vibrant downtown experience.

The project will introduce planters and reflective delineators to temporarily reconfigure the street and evaluate impacts on traffic flow and safety. These elements will occupy street parking spaces on both the north and south sides of 10th Street, from S 2nd Avenue (at the viaduct exit) to Mall Avenue. Installation will be complete by Friday, June 26, with the data collection officially beginning Monday, June 29.

Traffic calming strategies, such as narrowed lanes and curb extensions (bump-outs), chicanes, traffic circles, and visual treatments such as street art, landscaping, and furniture are designed to naturally slow vehicle speeds, reduce cut-through traffic, and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. These approaches can also help reduce noise and enhance overall livability.

Throughout the pilot, DTSF will activate the corridor with a rotating lineup of local food trucks, offering quick and convenient dining options for visitors and downtown workers. Vendors will be onsite during lunch hours (11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.), with select evening activations from 4 – 6:30 p.m.  To enhance the experience, the City will place picnic tables on the green space next to the mural, creating a welcoming area for visitors to sit and enjoy offerings from nearby food trucks.

Additional programming will include family-friendly art activations led by the City’s Arts Coordinator near the Great Outdoor Store, helping transform the corridor into an inviting, creative environment.

“This project is about more than traffic - it’s about shaping the future of how people experience downtown,” said Brandon Hanson, CEO of Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. “By testing traffic calming strategies on 10th Street, we’re helping inform the long-term design and reconstruction of the viaducts while advancing the vision of complete streets. We want downtown to be a destination, not a pass-through. We welcome visitors to slow down, pause, park, and truly engage with everything our community has to offer.”

The pilot also highlights the convenience of nearby public parking, including ramps such as the Mall Avenue Ramp and First Avenue Ramp, making it easy to stop, eat, shop, and explore downtown.

City officials are optimistic about the outcomes. “Our goal is to calm traffic without reducing the number of visitors to the area, supporting local businesses and residents while making the streets safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians,” said Troy Miller, Principal Traffic Engineer. “This project allows us to evaluate ideas in real time and hear directly from community members about what works best.”

Vehicle speed and volume will be measured before, during, and after the project to evaluate the effectiveness in calming traffic.  The planters and barriers will remain in place throughout the study period and will be removed by August 7.  The City will share the volume and speed data with DTSF.

People are encouraged to visit the area throughout July, support local vendors, and experience firsthand how small changes can make a big difference in how downtown feels and functions.

More information is available at dtsf.com and on DTSF social channels.

John Gaskins---6 game home stand starting tonight----

The headline is Canaries Changing their team name to the Minnehaha Martians---(It is only for Friday night—3rd year they’ve done it—but you could (act taken back by it)---John you have some ex-plaining to do----

Players will sport new "Minnehaha Martians" jerseys that night, which select fans will get to take home after the game— an event made possible by an online jersey auction that fans can start bidding in right now.

Video clips, music, and famous lines and sounds from well-known movies and TV series about the paranormal will add to the alien sensation of the evening.

"It's time for the Canaries to fly away and for the only professional baseball team in South Dakota to get alien," Higbe says. "Americans are so swept up by the fascination with the extraterrestrial, we thought, why not 'phone home' and make it our own in Sioux Falls?!"

So, they will. And then... the Sioux Falls Canaries will return on Saturday night. For good.

After all, this will be the "3rd Annual Area 51 Night" at The Birdcage, and this "Minnehaha Martians" one-game name  change has become a fun and popular tradition.

The Birds will continue to celebrate outrageously fun creatures on Saturday with "Pokémon Night," honoring the Japanese media franchise that takes place in a shared universe in which humans co-exist with the eponymous creatures, a large variety of species which have special powers.

Games on "Sunday Family Funday" (4:05), "$10 Tuesday" (6:35), "Waggin' Wednesday" (dogs get in free, 6:35), and "Throwback Thursday," a special Fourth of July celebration with fireworks after the game (6:35).

Plenty of ticket and concession deals are included in those latter four games. Details are below.

Tickets for all Canaries games are most easily purchased online at tickets.sfcanaries.com. Fans can also visit or call the Canaries box office to purchase tickets at 605-336-6060 during weekday business hours. Walk-up tickets are available at the Canaries ticket windows at The Birdcage starting 95 minutes before each game. Gates open one hour before each game start.
