Mary—good morning----what’s on your list---on the 10th of June?

The new Social Security and Medicare Trustees Report released June 9th—tells us what we already know: Congress must act to protect and strengthen Social Security. The report shows that Social Security trust funds are now expected to be depleted in 2034—the same year as we heard in last year’s estimate. The new projection means Congress will still need to close the remaining roughly 20% shortfall, or Americans will face Social Security cuts that they really cannot afford.
Social Security is a lifeline for 201,259 people in South Dakota. It is earned through a lifetime of hard work. It’s not a bonus or a handout. For many South Dakotans, Social Security is an essential part of their plan for financial security in retirement. These payments help cover basic needs like housing, groceries, utilities and health care. In fact, a recent AARP survey foundthat65% of Americans 50-plus say that if Social Security was eliminated, the couldn’t go 6 months without borrowing money or selling something.
This should be a wake-up call: Congress needs to act. Americans have worked hard and paid into Social Security their entire lives, and they deserve to count on it when they retire. No family should see any cuts to what they’ve earned in Social Security. Today more than 71 million people rely on Social Security, and as America ages, ensuring it stays strong will become EVEN MORE CRITICAL. The 125 million Americans age 50 and older have made clear: Cutting Social Security or Medicare is not an option. This is money Americans have earned over a lifetime of hard work. They planned for retirement, followed the rules and now Congress must keep its promise by strengthening, not cutting Social Security. At a time when the future of Social Security is being tested by proposals that would weaken the program, the Trustees Report highlighted the need for Congress to protect what people have earned. We will not let special interests push proposals to cut Social Security for middle class families. We urge Congress to act in a bipartisan way to ensure Social Security can continue to be strong for our children and grandchildren.
Americans work hard and pay into Social Security for their entire lives. Of the South Dakotans receiving Social Security, nearly 41% rely on it for half of their family income. And more than 18%rely on Social Security for 90% of their family income. Social Security is one of the most successful and popular initiatives in history and has helped generations of Americans stay out of poverty and thrive in retirement. Social Security isn’t going bankrupt, but Congress needs to protect and strengthen it now and in the future.
Sioux Falls Voters have yet another chance to go to the polls on Tuesday June 23rd to select the next Mayor, as well as members of the City Council. 3 council seats will be determined in the run-off. These are the leaders who will help shape Sioux Falls for years to come and the decisions they make will impact your daily life, your family and your neighborhood. You can find video voter guides on the AARP You Tube Channel—jus search for AARP in South Dakota—and you can see what the candidates had to say about aging in place, improving pedestrian safety, and planning for smart, sustainable development. Absentee voting starts June 16th for this run-off election. You voice matters and this election may come down to just a handful of votes. Make a plan, show up, and encourage others to do the same. You can go to aarp.org and SD vote for the information.
